Pre-Procedure Registered Nurse (RN/LPN)

As our Pre-Procedure Nurse, you'll make a meaningful impact by guiding patients through every step of their preparation, helping reduce procedure cancellations, and ensuring a positive patient experience.
In this role, you'll conduct pre-procedure telephone assessments, review medical histories and medications, provide individualized education and preparation instructions, document in EPIC, and collaborate with physicians and clinical staff to ensure patients are ready for their procedures. You'll also serve as a trusted resource for patients by answering questions, addressing concerns, and coordinating care to support the best possible outcomes.

Job Duties
- Triages patients either in person or on telephone. Schedules appointments, answers questions and/or determines the need for provider intervention.
- Supports the practice and acts as a liaison between the providers and patients.
- Manages phone calls to patients regarding test/lab results and provides appropriate instruction for treatment, as directed by the providers.
- Processes medication requests/changes/refills per established protocols. This includes having knowledge of medications, including basic dosages, side effects and interactions.
- Collects and enters quality data into EHR
- Meets requirements for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous waste.
- Provides patient education as needed for the scheduled test/procedures.
- Provides assistance with diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed by the provider. This includes obtaining specimens, labeling and disposition to the laboratory and explaining diagnostic procedures to patient as needed.
- Effectively documents within the electronic health record.
- Provides patient education as needed for the scheduled test/procedures.
- Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Department Specific Duties
Gastroenterology Clinic
- Rooms and prepares patient for examination. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
- Completes discharge of patient from exam room. This may include written instructions, scheduling a follow-up appointment, providing referral information or scheduling patients for testing procedures and providing instructions.
- Prepares the exam and treatment rooms, including instrument, supplies and protective devices for exam and testing. Maintains and stocks supplies. Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with infection control and manufacturer recommendations.
- Maintains on-site sample medications according to Mercy's policies and procedures
- Administers injections as needed.
- Reviews medical records prior to patient visits to ensure physician/provider has appropriate history to see the patient, if not, facilitates receipt of documentation, testing results, and imaging.
- Provide clinical scribe coverage as needed.
- Communicate test results and medication changes to patients.
- Provides coverage for other nursing staff if/when needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, computer skills, organization, time management, attention to detail and the ability to remain poised and efficient in a fast-paced environment.
Professional Experience
- Previous experience in a medical office setting is preferred.
Education
- Education sufficient to obtain required licensure.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
- Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa or compact state required
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
- Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
