Job Description

Assists professional medical personnel in the provision of health/nutrition services to the public by performing a variety of health/nutrition screening procedures and conducting basic medical procedures. Work may be performed either in a County clinic, a client's home, or at other community settings as required by assignment. Employees are responsible for assessing the patient's physical, emotional and/or nutritional well-being.


Major duties:

  • Performs clinical duties.
  • Performs administrative and other non-clinical duties.
  • Based on assignment, may perform interpreter activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Position Information

Arlington County's Department of Human Services is seeking a Clinic Aide (Temporary Regular Grant Funded) to provide professional nursing services for the Behavioral Health Care (BHC) Division. The BHC Division provides outpatient psychiatric services including health and wellness assessments, education, and targeted intervention to seriously mentally ill adults and their families. This employee is a collaborating member of a team which includes a physician, registered nurses, case managers, mental health therapists, and coordinated service providers. The Clinic Aide provides clinical nursing care with specific consideration of external factors impacting the client's overall health condition. The Clinic Aide will receive cross training to serve in Behavioral Health Care programs including Adult Outpatient Services, Clarendon House Psychosocial Rehabilitation Day program, Child and Family Services Program, Same Day Access, and Office Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) clinic.

Specific duties include:

  • Performing comprehensive health needs assessments and coordinating primary care integration;
  • Assisting nursing staff to monitor and track health assessment data; referral for physical health treatment and other wellness interventions, and the coordination of medical and psychiatric care;
  • Supporting and coaching clients on how to access appropriate care and linking clients with other service providers;
  • Participating in the provision of outreach to high-risk clients in the psychiatric services program;
  • Aiding with other service providers, clients, and supportive collaterals at regular intervals as appropriate to client’s treatment;
  • Providing information to client regarding other potential service providers/agencies and assisting with linkage when indicated;
  • Documenting client records to meet local, state, federal and agency requirements;
  • Communicating verbally with insurance companies as needed for prior authorization medications; and
  • Supporting the Psychiatric clinic in collaboration with the Psychiatrist.

The successful candidate will possess nursing assessment skills, critical thinking skills and a basic working knowledge of co-morbid medical conditions in the chronically mentally ill and/or dual diagnosed. The candidate must also be able to work independently, have effective communication skills and be able to work well with a variety of professional staff.

Minimums:

  • Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard high school or obtaining a GED certificate, or the equivalent; and
  • Some experience in providing direct human services in the area of addiction, serious mental illness, chronic disease management, outpatient behavioral services.

Substitution Education may be substituted by additional directly related experience on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Community or inpatient psychiatric experience;
  • LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse); and/or
  • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant).

Special Requirements

Must possess CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.

A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Must complete pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check.

Employment restrictions: To ensure that dual relationships are avoided and that employees who are also clients do not relate to their service provider as co-professionals, employees will not be hired by the County to provide or support services to the team or program in which they are current clients:

  • You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (except for Crisis Intervention services).
  • At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with one day 9:30 am-6:00 pm.
