We currently have an opportunity to join East Suffolk Council's Regulatory Compliance team as a Clerk of Works.

The role:

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Clerk of Works Officer to join our Estates and Inspections team. This is a vital role ensuring all construction, refurbishment, and maintenance work across our housing stock are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest possible standard.

The successful candidate will act as the organisation’s on-site quality assurance representative, monitoring workmanship, materials, compliance, and progress across a wide range of projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor construction and maintenance works to ensure they meet approved specifications, drawings, and quality standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and provide detailed reports on progress, compliance, and any defects identified.
  • Ensure that contractors adhere to health and safety requirements, legislation, method statements, and contractual obligations.
  • Ensure our residents receive a value for money and high-quality service.
  • Verify that materials used meet the required standards and are installed correctly.
  • Liaise with contractors, project managers, and internal stakeholders to resolve site issues efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, actions, and communications throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assist in the handover of completed works, ensuring all defects are addressed and documentation is complete.
  • Provide technical advice and support to the compliance team where required.

What you will need:

You will be a detail-oriented professional with strong technical knowledge of construction processes, building regulations, and industry best practices. You will be comfortable ensuring compliance and quality, and challenging contractors diplomatically when required.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in a Clerk of Works, site inspection, or construction quality assurance role.
  • Strong understanding of building regulations, standards, and construction methods.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify defects and non-compliance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in IT systems, including report-writing tools and digital inspection platforms.
