Major Duties and Responsibilities


Trial Court Management & Support

Provides leadership, technical support, and oversight of Ketchikan Court clerk operations, including case processing, case flow management, court records, financial activities, jury administration, and customer service. Ensures compliance with Alaska Court System rules and First District policies while supervising and supporting clerical staff to maintain accuracy, efficiency, and high-quality service. Monitors court performance, implements process improvements, reviews policies and procedures, serves as Probate Registrar, and collaborates with judges, court administration, and statewide partners on initiatives that promote effective administration of justice.


Human Resources Management

Supervises a clerical staff of nine by managing work assignments, position descriptions, recruitment, hiring, training, performance evaluations, employee development, and disciplinary actions. Ensures compliance with administrative and personnel policies, including timekeeping, leave administration, and Family and Medical Leave requirements. Provides training for new and existing employees, maintains comprehensive knowledge of court operations to provide operational support and staff coverage, leads staff meetings to promote communication and professional development, and addresses employee concerns by responding to complaints, conducting investigations, and administering grievance procedures.


Facility and Materials Management

Manages court technology and data systems by troubleshooting issues, maintaining accurate records, ensuring data integrity, and coordinating with information systems staff on computer-related matters. Oversees facility operations by coordinating maintenance and repairs, monitoring improvement projects, responding to facility use requests, and recommending enhancements to ensure safe and efficient court operations. Develops and prioritizes the annual court budget and evaluates requests for supplies, equipment, and personnel to support operational needs and effective resource management.


Additionally, you will attend to other matters as assigned by the Area Court Administrator (ACA), Presiding Judge, or other judges. This may include personnel matters, special projects, research, and various requests for information and assistance as needed.


The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. Please detail how you possess these traits in the required letter of interest.

  • Recent supervisory experience which includes assigning and delegating work, setting priorities, and mentoring staff.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience prioritizing objectives and working efficiently throughout interruptions.
  • Experience working with high-priority, confidential, or sensitive information.
  • Ability and demonstrated experience in successfully training staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience researching and analyzing federal and state laws, regulations, and/or court cases.
  • Advanced competency in MS Office software.


This position is in the partially-exempt service; the incumbent serves "at-will" to the hiring authority.

Work Schedule
Full-time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

Examples of duties

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND four years of administrative level work experience, of which two years must be at the level equivalent to a Clerk of Court 3 or Court Supervisor 4 with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer.

OR

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in business administration, public administration, criminal justice, or a closely related field AND two years of administrative level work experience. The required work experience is met by service such as a Clerk of Court 3 or Court Supervisor 4 with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer.
