To provide a clean and comfortable environment for clients and staff in accordance with acceptable standards and in compliance with the policies and procedures of the Centre.

Cleaning

● To clean washrooms including fixtures (toilets, sinks, urinals, and showers), floors, walls (including cubicle walls), etc. while using appropriate cleaning agents.

● To clean and maintain the floors in dormitories, hallways, utility rooms by mopping, sweeping, dry mopping and/or polishing with the buffer daily as required.

● To clean glass in doors and windows, baseboards, heaters, windowsills, pipes, lockers, etc. as required

● To place any clothing or other items left on the floor in their appropriate lockers or in garbage bags with tags.

Laundry Duties

● To strip and make beds in the dormitories, changing linens daily (except those occupied by the same person whose linens will be changed weekly).

● To collect and launder all soiled linen towels.

● To maintain the linen rooms in an orderly manner.

Other Cleaning Duties

● To clean and maintain the main floors by sweeping, dry mopping and/or polishing with the buffer daily as required.

● To sweep and wet mop the main stairways daily or as required.

● To clean main floor client washroom including wet mopping the floor and cleaning agents.

● To clean chapel at least once per week including vacuuming floors, dusting chairs, pulpit, penitent form, piano and arranging hymn books and bibles, etc.

● To clean elevator at least once per week, paying particular attention to its condition daily.

● To leave the first floor mop room clean after use.

To provide cleaning supplies inventory, maintenance and distribution daily or as needed

● To be of general assistance to the maintenance worker.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• The incumbent’s work environment is typically at work sites within various residential or community settings. The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions: dealing with angry and abusive people, verbal abuse, odours, and exposure to drugs and alcohol.

EDUCATION

• High School Graduation preferred

• Certificate in Cleaning/Janitorial Services preferred

• Crisis Intervention

• First Aid Certificate

• Knowledge of WHMIS

• Ability to lift over 20 pounds

EXPERIENCE

• One year to three years of prior related experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMLOYMENT:

• Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required.

This is part time position based on 24 hours per week. • Normal shift hours of work – 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. – 10:30pm Flexibility in hours is required).

• Each eight hours shift includes: 2 fifteen minutes paid breaks and a thirty minute unpaid lunch break.

• Normal location of work is at The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope, 2044 Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS.

Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $17.00 to $18.08 with a maximum of $21.69.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
