Job Description
Starting Wage Range: $18.86/hr. - $24.07/hr.
Contributes to the Tribe’s mission of preserving and perpetuating the cultural traditions of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde through assisting Shawash-iliʔi Skul staff in a Chinuk Wawa immersion classroom.
Essential Functions:
- Develops a functional proficiency with Chinuk Wawa language.
- Develops personal literacy in written Chinuk Wawa.
- Attends linguistics, teaching methods, and curriculum development trainings.
- Works with staff in the classroom, on the playground, and in field trip supervision.
- Assists in keeping classroom facilities clean.
- Replenishes materials and supplies for classroom activities and assists in cultural activities.
- Follows Teacher’s schedule and plans while providing group and individual assistance.
- Observes and learns teaching methods of Chinuk language immersion in classroom.
- Maintains a safe environment for students and adheres to program policies and procedures.
- Reports concerns and incidents to teachers.
- Interacts appropriately with students and encourages experimentation and socialization skills.
- Responds to parents requests for information.
- Provides frequent feedback and guidance using positive communication skills with all students.
- Maintains a good working relationship with appropriate program and department personnel.
- Provides aide in completing and filing daily administrative classroom tasks.
- Aides in dissemination of information to parents.
- Assists with curriculum and activity prep as well as book translations.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Minimum of six (6) months working with children preferred.
- OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Driving Requirements:
- Must maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.
Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:
- Must become functionally proficient in classroom use of Chinuk Wawa language within 1 year of hire.
- Food handler’s card and First Aid certification required within one month of hire.
- Must be dependable and willing to participate in additional trainings.
- Ability to work well with children, families and education staff.
- Must have ability to respond courteously and tactfully to complaints and client requests, and to maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of and experience with Grand Ronde culture required.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
- Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
- Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
- Occasionally requires lifting of up to 20 pounds.
- Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
- This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
- May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
- Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
