Maybe you've built a strong foundation in HR and you're ready to take on more. Maybe you've spent years in benefits, employee relations, talent acquisition, or HR operations, and you've found yourself drawn to the questions behind the work: Why is this position classified this way? How do we know this salary is fair? What does the market say?
Either way, this is your opportunity to move from supporting HR decisions to shaping them.
DMV's Human Resources team is looking for a Classification & Compensation Consultant who is ready to become the go-to resource on how jobs are structured and how employees are paid across one of the largest and most visible agencies in the Commonwealth. You'll build specialized expertise in one of the most in-demand areas of HR, work directly with managers across the agency, and see the real impact of your work on employees' careers and paychecks.
Grow up or grow across. For those seeking advancement, this role is a meaningful step up in responsibility and influence. For experienced HR professionals, it's a chance to add a specialty to your toolkit and broaden your career options without starting over.
Your HR experience counts here. If you've worked in recruitment, you understand how pay decisions affect hiring. If you've worked in employee relations, you know how classification concerns surface. If you've worked in benefits or operations, you know the systems and policies. All of it transfers.
Specialized expertise that travels. Classification and compensation skills are among the most valued in public and private sector HR. The analysis, benchmarking, and policy application you'll do here will strengthen your profile for years to come.
A seat at the table. You'll partner with managers and supervisors, advise HR colleagues, and collaborate with Talent Acquisition on pay decisions. Your recommendations will carry weight.
Help shape career paths. You'll support DMV's Upshift and career pathing efforts, contributing to work that helps employees see where their careers can go.
A team invested in your growth. You'll join a Human Resources division committed to consistency, accuracy, and problem-solving, with colleagues who share knowledge and support one another. At DMV, growth doesn't always require changing jobs. Upshift, our in-house career progression program, sets clear, well-defined criteria for advancing within your current working title, so you'll always know what proficiencies to build next. Hiring range: $70,975 to $81,621. Earning potential within this title: up to $92,267.
Job Analysis and Evaluation. Evaluate new and existing positions to ensure they are classified correctly. Partner with managers to develop and revise Position Descriptions, including role title, working title, SOC code, and FLSA status. Conduct job evaluations and complete crosswalks, document your recommendations, and communicate outcomes clearly.
Compensation Administration. Help administer DMV's compensation program in line with Commonwealth policy and agency practice. Review salary requests and build defensible, data-based salary analyses in Excel for individual pay recommendations, working title benchmarking, and agency compensation studies. Document pay actions on the Pay Action Worksheet and keep data accurate in Cardinal, PageUp, and internal reports. Serve as a resource to HR staff, managers, and Talent Acquisition on pay determinations and adjustments.
Compensation Request Management. Own the Compensation mailbox and tracker, responding to inquiries, routing requests, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Market and Data Analysis. Use market, state, and position data to perform compensation analyses and produce routine and ad hoc reports that inform real decisions.
Special Projects. Contribute to compensation initiatives through research, analysis, and project planning, and support strategic, long-term Upshift and career pathing development.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. It was the 10th state to be admitted to the Union on June 25, 1788. Home to approximately 8 million residents, Virginia is the 12th most populous state in the United States. The capital is Richmond, and its most populous city is Virginia Beach.
The narrative history of the Commonwealth of Virginia often begins with the founding of Jamestown in 1607, near what is now modern day Williamsburg, Virginia. Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in the New World, and the Virginia General Assembly, established on July 30, 1619, is now recognized as the oldest legislative body in the western hemisphere. When Virginia became a royal colony in 1624, the robust tobacco trade that had been developing in Virginia helped establish the American colonies as a powerful economic force. During the American Revolution, Virginia witnessed the final surrender of British forces at Yorktown and later became known as the birthplace of many revolution-era figures and future American presidents, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. To date, 8 United States presidents have been born in Virginia, more than in any other state.
The modern government of Virginia is nearly identical in structure to the federal government, and is divided into 3 branches, these being the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The Virginia General Assembly is comprised of the 100-member House of Delegates and the 40-member Senate. A governor and lieutenant governor are elected every 4 years. Governors cannot be elected to or serve consecutive terms. Virginia’s judicial system consists of the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Circuit Courts, and the lower General District Courts and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. Virginia has 13 electoral votes in presidential elections, and possesses 11 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
