Job Description

Claim Specialists within the Law Department’s Litigation Support Division play a crucial role in assisting City agencies in complying with discovery obligations in litigation. This position requires a proactive approach to the management of record requests, utilizing both manual and computerized office systems, and collaborating closely with internal and external agency staff to ensure efficient and effective task management. The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to, conducting searches for records maintained in the ordinary course of the specific agency’s business. The task requires management of a case load of varying size of matters pertaining to specific claims made against the City of New York and specific agencies. The Claims Specialist operates under supervision but exercises independent judgment in managing assigned tasks. The Claim Specialist is required to monitor all court due dates and ensure that the records located and produced are legally and factually accurate to the claims presented. Additional to this task is working on larger projects as necessary, which requires following process outlines and providing responses in accordance with the structure of the project. It is expected that with experience, the Claim Specialist will expand his or her responsibilities to include management of other staff as necessary.

CLAIM SPECIALIST - 30726

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or

2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time satisfactory experience investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss; or

3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time satisfactory
experience investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss; or

4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to “1”, “2” or “3” above.

College education may be substituted for experience as described in “2” or “3” above on the basis that 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university may be substituted for each year of
required experience. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its
educational equivalent.
