This is a hybrid position (3 days in office) based out of our Tampa, FL office.
What You'll Do
As Claims Counsel, you will oversee title insurance claims from initial notice through final resolution while serving as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, insureds, agents, and outside counsel.
Key responsibilities include:
- Manage and resolve title insurance claims across multiple states and jurisdictions.
- Investigate claims and evaluate coverage under title insurance policies.
- Analyze legal, factual, and underwriting issues to determine liability and exposure.
- Communicate coverage positions and claim status updates to insureds, agents, attorneys, and other stakeholders.
- Resolve title defects through negotiation, curative action, settlement, litigation management, or other appropriate means.
- Direct and manage outside counsel, including litigation strategy, budgets, and case development.
- Evaluate agent liability and pursue recovery opportunities when appropriate.
- Negotiate settlements and obtain necessary approvals in accordance with company guidelines.
- Review and monitor claim-related expenses and litigation costs.
- Provide practical legal guidance and risk analysis to support business objectives.
- Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Take ownership of claims from inception through resolution while ensuring a high level of customer service and professional responsiveness.
Skills and Experience Required to Be Successful
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) and active license to practice law
- 3-5 years of legal experience required
- Experience in real estate, title insurance, property law, litigation, insurance defense, claims, or related practice areas preferred
- Knowledge of title insurance and real estate closing transactions is preferred; however, candidates with strong legal research, analytical, negotiation, and writing skills and an interest in real estate/title law will also be considered
- Aptitude for reviewing, processing, and organizing large volumes of documentation and written communications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail with exceptional organizational and time-management abilities
- Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to develop practical resolutions for covered claims
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make well-reasoned legal and business decisions
