The hiring manager may elect to fill this position as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer, dependent upon the experience of the selected candidate.
PMC is the Project Management and Construction group within Duke Energy, responsible for building new power generation assets. PMC Engineering provides leadership and oversight of contract engineering resources during all phases of Duke Energy’s major projects (development, design, execution, commissioning and closeout). As part of Duke Energy’s broader strategy to meet rising customer demand and decarbonize the grid, PMC is actively planning and building solar, bulk energy storage (batteries), simple cycle and combined cycle generating facilities. Additionally, PMC is developing projects for advanced nuclear, hydro pumped storage, carbon capture, LNG storage and potentially, offshore wind.
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
The Senior Engineer is at the mid-career level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts/procedures and identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. The Senior Engineer also serves in an advisory role, providing guidance to other engineers and project managers.
This Civil Engineering position reports to the Manager, PMC New Generation Engineering.
Responsibilities:
The Engineer works as a member of the project team to support of all phases of major projects, from initial project scoping/development through construction and final project close-out. These responsibilities include:
Support development of major project scope and EPC bid package. –
Support cost estimate, schedule, risk analysis, bid evaluation and contract development.
Provide engineering oversight to ensure compliance with project contract and design criteria.
Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of complex problems.
Handle differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.
Participate in design reviews, drawing reviews, construction support, resolution of technical RFIs, construction support, and project warranty support.
Conduct engineering related studies.
Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.
Assist in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
Develop positive internal and external working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Maintain accurate records and files
Keep abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
Coach and mentor other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.
Represent the company positively and professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications – Engineer III
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.
Basic/Required Qualifications – Senior Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of permitting, storm water, geotechnical, foundations, concrete, structural steel, lifting/rigging, and building codes.
Major project experience with emphasis on constructability and project execution.
Skilled in principles of engineering in the utility industry.
Geotechnical and Structural specialty
Erosion control design
Experience with 3-D modelling using FEA software.
Utility experience.
Professional Engineering certification.
Specific Requirements
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, clothing, earplugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed
Working Conditions
This position will primarily support projects in the Carolina Region of Duke Energy but may support projects in other regions (Midwest and Florida). Preferred base location is Charlotte, NC. Alternate locations Plainfield Indiana. Hiring manager will entertain assigning a base location at another Duke Energy facility in the Carolina Region.
Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy base facility.
Valid Driver’s License required.
Perform work on construction sites and in office environment.
Occasional mildly strenuous physical activity (extensive walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladders, etc.)
Ability to work at heights and from suspended work platforms.
Travel 25-50%
Relocation is offered for this position.
