Project Overview:

Mining and Metals:

Increasing production of critical minerals provides key components of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to batteries. This shift to clean energy—and the need for commodities—is critical to underpinning the energy transition. At Bechtel, our teams extract these vital resources to support net zero in a way which is more sustainable than ever before.

This role, will supervise a team of civil/structural personnel, estimate project staffing needs, and schedule and assign work. Preparing discipline estimates and work plans and responsible for technical quality of discipline deliverables civil/structural investigations and studies. The leadership will drive high quality work plans, successful implementation of civil/structural components, team support and training, and project performance.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Planing, developing, directing, and participating in the day-to-day Civil/Structural engineering activity on small to medium sized projects or a portion of a major project with minimal to moderate complexity within a global business unit utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Supervising, coordinating, and reviewing the work of personnel assigned, estimates staffing needs and schedules and assigns work accordingly.
  • Providing the technical input to meet procurement requirements.
  • Preparing or overseeing the preparation of Civil/Structural discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Reviewing and making recommendations for the Civil/Structural engineering aspects of bid evaluations and awards for approval by project engineering.
  • When directed, coordinating with client representatives to obtain their approval of Civil/Structural engineering aspects of the work.
  • Reviewing and approving steel and concrete calculations, licensing evaluations, design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, and change orders, for the project to which assigned.
  • Ensuring that assigned Civil/Structural engineering personnel receive appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development.
  • Leading and reviewing of project procedures and cost estimates for proposals, forecasts, and change orders.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals.
  • Provides guidance to and works collaboratively with subordinates within the latitude of established company policies.
  • Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that affect immediate organization(s).
  • Previous experience working in a multidiscipline team; with an understanding of CSA engineering deliverables for major Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) projects.
  • Previous experience as an Area lead.
  • Understanding of Chilean codes and standards, and American design Codes is preferred.
  • Managing of Structural Analysis software, preferable StaadPro, Methcad, and similar.
  • Responsible for the technical integrity and quality of civil/structural design within assigned scope.
  • Approves structural design criteria, calculations and deliverables.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards and project specifications.
  • Provides technical direction to engineers and designers.
  • Leads coordination with geotechnical, mechanical, piping and other disciplines.
  • Ensures alignment between structural analysis, design criteria and 3D design models.
