Job Description

Civil Engineering Lecturer

Application Deadline: 1 July 2026

Department: HE Engineering

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Wigan & Leigh College

Compensation: £31,699 - £242,540 / year

37 Hours per Week, Permanent
You’ve helped turn engineering plans into real places. Now help students understand how it’s done.

Roads, structures and infrastructure begin with technical decisions.

As our Civil Engineering Lecturer, you’ll help students understand the mathematics, science, design and professional judgement behind those decisions. You’ll bring engineering principles to life through industry examples, practical activity and software such as Revit and AutoCAD.

You’ll teach students across Levels 2 to 5. Some will be taking their first steps into civil engineering. Others will be progressing towards higher technical study, university, apprenticeships or professional careers. You’ll meet them at the right level and help them build both technical understanding and the confidence to apply it.

This role is about more than explaining theory. You’ll show students how engineering concepts connect to real structures, construction projects and infrastructure challenges. You’ll help them understand why accuracy matters, how design choices affect delivery and what employers expect from people entering the profession.

You may already be an experienced lecturer. You may instead be a civil engineering or construction professional who has trained, mentored or supported others in the workplace. You don’t need to arrive as a finished teacher. If you bring strong technical knowledge and can help others understand it, we’ll support you to develop your teaching practice and gain the qualification you need.

What you’ll do

  • Teach Civil Engineering across Levels 2 to 5 through classroom learning, practical activity and applied projects.
  • Bring Engineering Science, Engineering Mathematics and design subjects to life through real industry examples.
  • Use Revit, AutoCAD and other relevant digital tools to support modelling, design and technical understanding.
  • Help students connect engineering theory with real structures, infrastructure and construction challenges.
  • Plan learning that develops technical knowledge, applied skill and professional confidence.
  • Assess student work, give clear feedback and help learners understand how to improve.
  • Monitor attendance, engagement and progress and act early when students need additional support or challenge.
  • Act as a Personal Tutor, supporting students with academic progress, wellbeing and their next steps.
  • Help learners understand progression routes into apprenticeships, higher technical study, university and employment.
  • Keep your subject knowledge current and bring developments in civil engineering, construction and digital design into the curriculum.
  • Work with employers and industry partners to strengthen the relevance of students’ learning.
  • Contribute to course development, quality improvement, Open Evenings and activities promoting Civil Engineering.

What you’ll bring

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Construction or a closely related subject.
  • Current or recent professional experience in civil engineering, construction or a related technical field.
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles and their practical application.
  • Working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD or comparable engineering design software.
  • The ability to explain engineering, mathematical and scientific concepts clearly.
  • Confidence supporting people working at different technical and academic levels.
  • A teaching qualification, or willingness to work towards one. We’ll support you to get there.
  • Level 2 English and maths, or willingness to achieve these within an agreed timeframe.
  • Experience teaching, training, coaching, mentoring or supporting others to learn would be helpful.
  • Experience of higher technical education would be an advantage.
What you’re like
  • Technically credible. You bring real civil engineering knowledge and professional context into learning.
  • Clear. You explain complex technical ideas in ways students can understand and apply.
  • Applied. You connect mathematics, science and design with real engineering challenges.
  • Encouraging. You help students build confidence without lowering expectations.
  • Organised. You stay on top of planning, assessment, records and student progress.
  • Industry-aware. You keep your teaching connected to current technology, practice and career routes.
  • Collaborative. You work well with colleagues, employers and external partners.
  • Reflective. You keep developing your technical knowledge and teaching practice.
Essentials
  • You’ll need an enhanced DBS check. If you get the job, we’ll do this for you.
  • You’re committed to safeguarding and inclusion.
  • You can travel across our sites and external learning locations.
  • You’re flexible and happy to work beyond standard hours when needed to support students and college activity.

Why work with us

Civil engineering shapes the places where people live, work and travel.

At Wigan & Leigh College, you’ll help students understand the expertise behind that work. You’ll see someone move from struggling with an engineering calculation to using it confidently in a design. You’ll help a learner understand how a digital model relates to the structure that will eventually be built. You’ll support students as they begin to see themselves as technicians, designers and engineers.

You’ll teach across a broad range of levels, giving you the opportunity to support students at different points in their journey. Some will need help building the foundations. Others will be ready to tackle higher-level technical concepts and prepare for the next stage of their careers.

You’ll also join a college with a strong commitment to technical education and the skills our communities and employers need. You’ll have the space to bring your industry experience into teaching, build links with employers and help keep the curriculum connected to the way civil engineering is changing.

This is a role where your professional knowledge does more than solve today’s engineering problems; it helps prepare the people who will work on tomorrow’s.
