THE COMPANY
Established in 1998, JSM Group designs and installs the power networks, digital infrastructure and specialist systems that critical industries run on, from high-power grid connections and data centres to renewable energy. Our turnkey teams deliver complex infrastructure at speed, on time, and with reduced legislative, technical and commercial risk.
Our pre-construction team turns ideas into buildable, well-planned projects before work starts on site. As a Pre-Construction Apprentice (studying Civil Engineering Technician) you'll give technical support to our engineers and construction professionals – preparing drawings, data and documentation that shape a project. You'll learn on real projects while working towards your Level 3 qualification, with a route towards professional Engineering Technician status.
What You'll Be Doing
Help prepare, produce and modify engineering drawings, models, documents and specifications to the relevant codes and standards.
Collect and interpret technical data, carry out basic calculations and analyse the results to support designs.
Use CAD and BIM software to create and present designs and visualisations.
Support health, safety and welfare compliance (including CDM), helping to identify hazards and manage risk in your work.
Apply relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice (such as CDM, DMRB and CSM) and communicate them correctly.
Support sustainability and net-zero goals on the projects you work on.
Use quality and document-control systems to help plan, monitor and deliver work to specification, budget and programme.
Help pull together pre-construction and tender information, take-offs and survey data with the team.
Get out on site – join site visits and surveys with the team to see how your drawings and plans are built, gather site data and measurements, and understand construction methods, constraints and health and safety in practice.
Communicate and liaise with the project team, clients and stakeholders, including clear written notes.
Complete your apprenticeship coursework and take responsibility for your own development.
What You'll Study
You'll work towards the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 standard (ST0091), typically over around 3 years plus an end-point assessment.
You'll gain a Level 3 qualification (BTEC National Diploma in Civil Engineering), with paid time for your off-the-job study.
You'll cover engineering principles, technical drawing and CAD/BIM, data and calculations, health & safety, sustainability, quality and communication.
On completion, you'll be eligible to work towards Engineering Technician (EngTech) status with a professional body such as the ICE.
After your Level 3, there may be the opportunity to progress onto the Level 6 Civil Engineer (degree) apprenticeship (ST0417) – a work-based route to a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status – continuing to earn. At the same time, you learn as you grow with us.
