Civil Engineer - Water Distribution Systems
Colorado Springs Utilities is looking for a Civil Engineer interested in the water and wastewater utility industry. In this position, you will aid the Water and Wastewater Design team in various phases of water distribution and wastewater collection system projects, including data analysis, researching and drafting standards and specifications, reviewing and approving new materials, design and construction. Key areas of focus:
- Planning/ Desktop Assessment /Research– Research utility records, GIS information, material information, soil information, as-built construction plans, property, and easement data for water project design
- Data Analysis– Evaluate data collected to identify utility and structure conflicts and site conditions necessary for determining design parameters and specifications
- Collaboration – Attend meetings with key stakeholders to facilitate holistic design, considering other utility infrastructure as well as street improvements
- Material Analysis – Analyze materials for use in the water and wastewater system, review applications for compliance with criteria, oversee field testing, and manage the material review committee
- Cathodic Protection – Assist with the design process for cathodic protection systems• Water Main Design - Assist with the design process for replacing and rehabilitating water distribution mains
- Construction Oversight – Perform on-site inspections of construction work to ensure consistency with design drawings
- Standards-Research and draft technical requirements and manage stakeholder input for Water and Wastewater Line Extension and Service Standards
- AD Design- Design water and wastewater distribution and collection systems utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D under the guidance of Professional Engineers
What Will It Take to Be Successful?
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering preferred
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to analyze data and develop recommendations
- Excellent attention to quality, detail, and accuracy
- Knowledge of AutoCAD is desirable but not required
- Professional demeanor and strong communication skills
- Innovative mindset and a willingness to explore new ideas and approaches
- Demonstrated curiosity and commitment to continuous learning and professional development

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (1/3 of the time), and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary only if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other criteria are met.
