PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE
SMEC is looking to appoint a Civil Engineer to provide engineering design and drafting services, prepare project documentation, and deliver appropriate technical support as required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for engineering design and modelling aspects within the Pretoria Roads & Highways Function – from planning, conceptual design to detailed design and construction drawings, specifically for geometric- and stormwater design, related to roads projects
Develop increased design ability and quality.
Draft technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality.
Assist with supervising small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates).
Mentor Technicians, Graduate Technologists and/or Graduate Engineers in relevant software tools.
Check the work of other team members.
Development of internal standards and implementing them.
Develop solutions to complex engineering problems.
Must be able to work in a team to support a leader but also take the lead on project designs.
Ensure that required drawing standards are maintained.
Deliver excellent client service while being client facing.
Assist with compiling and the completion of tender documents and bids.
Prepare project reports, implement and apply relevant codes of practice and ensuring that all work complies with SMEC’s quality control procedures.
Support Senior Engineers with project management tasks and take the lead when required.
Develop an understanding of the Function’s technologies and markets.
Apply SMEC’s quality systems and procedures and ensure enforcement.
Develop specifications, BoQ’s, cost estimates, and prepare final tender documentation.
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from accredited university/college
Minimum 3 years of practical experience
Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
Knowledge of basic project management and the use of project management software
Maintain quality and timelines of reporting
Planning of workload to meet deadlines
Proficiency in Bently OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil 3D design and analysis software packages
