About the Position

The Civil Engineer leads roadway projects of varying complexity through all phases of design, exercising initiative and independent judgment within defined technical and procedural limits. The purpose of this position is to design and review roadway projects according to standards established by the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT).

We Require

  • Two years of professional civil engineering work experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration, or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment

Other Requirements

Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.

Job Contributions

  • Design, plan, and inspect components of roadway engineering projects

  • Prepare conceptual plans, detailed plans, specifications, and estimates for public works construction project components

  • Assume the technical responsibility for coordinating/preparing/reviewing phases or components of projects, including engineering reports, calculations, plans, and special provisions in accordance with public works standards and codes

  • Make technical engineering analysis of proposed projects; evaluate need for design changes and make appropriate recommendations; review plans for conformity to uniform codes, local ordinances, and state and federal regulations

  • Develop drafting plans and technical drawings, and perform computing work as required

  • Participate in the development of project design concepts and criteria

  • Maintain project files and document design and project management decisions; write various analytical reports, and make technical estimates of a specialized nature in connection with various projects

  • Review project deliverables and assess scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period

  • Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
