GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of the position is to provide support for the daily operations of the Youth Services department of the library, to perform paraprofessional library duties, and to perform related work as required. The position works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under the general supervision of the Youth Services Librarian.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to relate to children, teens, and families.
Ability to become familiar with the needs and interests of children and teens.
Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly and responsive manner.
Extensive knowledge of computers, their operating systems, and programs likely to be used in libraries, including familiarity with the Internet, word processing and databases.
Ability to perform in front of groups of various ages and to maintain control of large numbers of people.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to set priorities and be self-motivated.
Strong organizational skills for a customer-service-oriented environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Ability to retain a valid S.C. driver’s license.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Prefer some college.
Education may be substituted for experience.
Related-experience required: 1 year.
Experience may be substituted for education.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Required None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a relatively safe and secure indoor work environment; may encounter noise, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, or poor ventilation.
