Compensation Range

$5,273.67 - $7,576.83 CAD Monthly

The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The Children and Youth Education Coordinator plans, coordinates, and delivers children and youth educational programming at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS) at UBC Farm. The position is responsible for seasonal and year-round programs, including summer camps, school programs, field trips, workshops, clubs, and special events that promote experiential learning, sustainability, and food systems education.

Working collaboratively with the Education Manager and the broader CSFS Education Team, the Coordinator develops curriculum, manages program operations, supervises seasonal staff and volunteers, administers program budgets, and builds relationships with schools and community organizations. The Coordinator ensures programs are safe, inclusive, financially sustainable, and aligned with the mission and strategic priorities of the Centre.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Education Manager and operates with considerable independence in planning, implementing, and managing the children and youth education portfolio. Works collaboratively as a member of the CSFS Education Team with the Practicum Lead and the Non-Credit and Micro-Credential Project Lead to support integrated educational programming, curriculum development, and shared learning initiatives.

Collaborates closely with other UBC Farm teams, including Operations, Landscape and Maintenance, Research, and Market Programming, to coordinate educational activities and support farm operations. Liaises with UBC departments, including the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Safety & Risk Services, and other administrative units, as well as schools, community organizations, Indigenous partners, families, and external stakeholders. May supervise seasonal staff, students, and volunteers.

Work Performed

Program Planning, Delivery, and Administration

• Plans, coordinates, and delivers children and youth educational programs, including summer camps, school programs, field trips, workshops, clubs, and special events.
• Develops annual program plans, schedules, and operating procedures to support effective program delivery.
• Manages program budgets, monitors revenues and expenditures, and recommends improvements to support program sustainability.
• Coordinates program logistics, including registration, scheduling, staffing, facilities, supplies, communications, and program documentation.
• Ensures programs comply with UBC policies and applicable safety, risk management, and child protection requirements, including emergency procedures and vulnerable sector screening.
• Coordinates with Farm Operations and other CSFS teams to support program delivery and operational requirements.
• Identifies opportunities to improve programming, strengthen community engagement, and support program growth.

Curriculum Development and Educational Programming

• Develops, implements, and updates age-appropriate curriculum, lesson plans, educational resources, and learning activities for children and youth.
• Designs educational programming that reflects experiential learning principles, sustainability, and food systems education.
• Collaborates with faculty, educators, researchers, and CSFS staff to ensure programming reflects current knowledge, educational best practices, and farm operations.
• Develops staff training materials and operational resources to support consistent, high-quality program delivery.

Staff Leadership, Partnerships, and Communications

• Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and mentors seasonal staff, students, and volunteers.
• Provides day-to-day leadership, coaching, and operational guidance to support effective program delivery.
• Builds and maintains relationships with schools, community organizations, families, Indigenous partners, and other stakeholders.
• Coordinates program communications, outreach, recruitment, and promotional activities in collaboration with Communications and other CSFS staff.
• Represents CSFS at community events, professional networks, and educational initiatives.

Program Evaluation and Team Collaboration

• Collects and analyzes program data and participant feedback to evaluate program effectiveness and inform future improvements.
• Prepares program reports and recommendations to support planning and decision-making.
• Collaborates with members of the CSFS Education Team on interdisciplinary educational initiatives and supports integrated programming across community, practicum, and non-credit education portfolios.
• Supports other CSFS educational initiatives and events by providing planning, administrative, logistical, or operational assistance as required.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position exercises judgement in planning, coordinating, and delivering educational programs that support a positive and safe participant experience. Errors in scheduling, communications, budgeting, logistics, or program delivery may result in operational inefficiencies, participant dissatisfaction, or delays in achieving program objectives. Judgement is required when supervising staff, allocating resources, responding to unexpected situations, and ensuring compliance with safety and child protection requirements. Decisions and actions can influence program quality, stakeholder relationships, and the reputation of CSFS and UBC. Most issues can be identified and corrected through established procedures, collaboration, and regular oversight.

Supervision Received

Works under the general direction of the Education Manager. Receives guidance on program priorities, educational objectives, and strategic alignment with CSFS and UBC Farm mandates. Operates with a moderate degree of independence while seeking direction on complex issues, program changes, or matters involving academic partnerships. Work is reviewed for effectiveness, alignment with program goals, and adherence to established UBC and CSFS policies and procedures.

Supervision Given

The Coordinator may be asked to co-supervise seasonal staff and/or students. This includes providing direction on day-to-day tasks, building schedules, ensuring alignment with program goals, and offering guidance during onsite educational activities. Some supervision of volunteers may be required. While not responsible for formal performance management or permanent staff, the Coordinator contributes to a collaborative and supportive team environment by modeling effective communication, fostering positive relationships with colleagues, and helping ensure consistency across CSFS community education initiatives.

Working Conditions

This position involves a combination of indoor administrative work and outdoor program delivery at the UBC Farm and potentially elsewhere. Indoor tasks include planning, managing registrations and communications, meeting with partners, and completing general administrative responsibilities at a computer workstation. Outdoor work occurs in a variety of weather conditions throughout the year while leading and/or supporting community educational activities. The role requires periods of walking across uneven terrain, standing for extended periods, and occasionally lifting or moving materials such as tables, signage, or program supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum one year of experience developing, coordinating, and delivering educational programs for children and youth, preferably in a community, outdoor, environmental, agricultural, or informal learning setting.
• Experience supervising, training, and supporting seasonal staff, students, volunteers, or youth leaders.
• Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, experiential learning, and age-appropriate educational programming.
• Experience managing program logistics, registration processes, budgets, and administrative systems.
• Knowledge of child safety, risk management, emergency procedures, and applicable legislation and policies related to working with children and youth.
• Strong interpersonal, leadership, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with diverse participants, families, schools, community partners, and colleagues.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement, and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Knowledge of food systems, sustainability, agriculture, environmental education, or related subject matter is an asset.
• First Aid/CPR certification is an asset. Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
