PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To Plan and manage the ventilation and occupational hygiene function at business unit level and comply with the requirements of section 12(1) of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 / Std 10 (NQF 4) is essential.
- Chamber of Mines certificate in Mine Environmental Control essential.
- Tertiary qualification Occupational Hygiene or relevant field is desirable.
- Minimum 3 years' working experience as a Ventilation Officer in a Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Department is essential.
- A valid medical certificate or medically fit to obtain such a certificate.
COMPETENCIES:
- Sound knowledge and experience in the planning, design and optimisation of underground ventilation and occupational hygiene system.
- Sound knowledge and experience in underground flammable gas management.
- Sound knowledge and experience in underground fire prevention, detection and suppression management.
- Sound knowledge and experience in managing ventilation and occupational hygiene programmes and systems.
- Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Regulations.
- Knowledge and experience in operational risk assessment.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Effective planning, design and optimisation of ventilation, refrigeration and occupational hygiene systems to ensure a healthy and safe working environment to sustain the business.
- Ensures that effective communication channels are maintained to highlight anormalies and make recommendations for improvement.
- Complies and submits internal reports on any matter relating to ventilation and occupational hygiene, fire prevention, detection and suppression, flammable gas intersections, emergency preparedness and response.
- Complies and submits statutory reports.
- Ensure that effective controls are in place to prevent underground fires and flammable gas incidents.
- Provides input into an effective emergency preparedness and response programme.
- Periodic revision of the ventilation and occupational hygiene risk assessment and standards.
- Ensures that learnings from incidents or accidents and the outcome of Planned Task Observations (PTOs) inform ventilation and occupational hygiene risk assessments, standards and procedures.
- Contribute to the drafting and periodic review of Mandatory Coes of Practice related to ventilation occupational hygiene.
- Alignment with industry best practice in terms of technical standards and strategies.
- Proper asset and cost management mechanisms are implemented and maintained.
