Job Description

The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency and professionalism. This position manages a plan examination unit and performs supervisory work in the engineering or architectural analysis of structures and building equipment systems, and the examination of plans for the construction, alteration or repair of buildings and equipment systems under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings.

Under direction:

- Assigns plan examination workload to plan examination personnel.
- Trains, supervises, and evaluates plan examination personnel.
- Examines and reviews design and/or equipment plans and specifications of the construction, alteration or repair of buildings under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, other pertinent laws and rules, and approved plans and specifications and zoning regulations regarding structures, materials, applications, and methods of construction, and zoning, etc.
- Reviews reports and recommendations on the approval of applications and the issuance of permits for building construction. Responds to applicant appeals of objectives.
- Engages in research, investigations, studies and examinations related to the construction or demolition of structures subject to the provisions of the NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, other pertinent laws and rules, and approved plans and specifications and zoning regulations.
- Explains and enforces rules and laws relevant to the field.
- Testifies as needed, including at ECB, depositions, and court.
- Represents the Agency, as needed, at meetings and seminars.
- May be required to perform fieldwork to make on site determination of structural stability and safety.
- May operate a vehicle in performance of assigned duties.

WORK LOCATION:
Unit assignment and work location are based on operational need. Transfers may occur at any time with sufficient notice.

CIVIL SERVICE STATUS:
Only those who are permanent in the Administrative Architect civil service title, applicants who are reachable on the Administrative Architect open competitive list, and applicants as indicated below will be considered.

Candidates who are permanent in comparable civil service titles may be considered for title change under rule 6.1.9 of the Personnel Rules and Regulations of the City of New York.

REMOTE WORK:
This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.

Qualifications

A valid New York State Registration as an Architect is required. In addition, candidates must have six ( 6 ) years of full-time paid experience in architectural work, at least two (2) years of which shall have been as an administrative architect.
