Job Description

About the Team:

Our Technology team drives the evolution of our Technology, Engineering, Data, Product and User Experience functions. With a keen focus on delivering cutting-edge solutions, we shape the digital landscape for our customers, readers and users. From revolutionizing visuals to optimizing tools and harnessing the power of data, mobile, video and social platforms, our team is committed to providing a seamless and immersive experience across all touchpoints. Collaborating closely with our newsrooms and strategic partners, we spearhead the development of groundbreaking products and technologies.

About the Role

As the Chief of Staff to the CTO, you will serve as the trusted advisor and strategic proxy to the Chief Technology Officer, shaping the vision, operations, and execution of the Office of the CTO (OCTO). Acting as a strategic owner and key decision maker, you will lead the OCTO team to drive operational excellence across our global Technology organization while contributing to complex strategic initiatives; such as enterprise-wide AI enablement or platform migrations. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will navigate high-level organizational design, negotiate and compromise with internal and external parties to accept new concepts, and drive cross-functional alignment between Technology, Functional, and Business leaders.

You Will:

  • Drive Strategy & Planning: Partner with the CTO and Tech Leadership to define long-term vision, technology strategy, and OKR frameworks. Act as a strategic owner to lead change management, organizational design, and execution for major strategic initiatives.
  • Act as Strategic Proxy: Serve as the trusted advisor and proxy to the CTO, making critical decisions, providing guidance, and representing the CTO in meetings with cross-functional and C-level stakeholders.
  • Ensure Executive Readiness: Think two steps ahead to anticipate the CTO’s needs, proactively providing strategic advice, briefings, and talking points to ensure they are prepared for all high-profile meetings and events, or issues and critical decisions.
  • Lead Complex Programs: Manage large, complex project initiatives of strategic importance involving large cross-functional teams. Conceptualize and create novel solutions and systems that improve the competitive position of the organization.
  • Run the OCTO Operation: Design, oversee, and continuously automate the operating cadences, executive reporting, and governance models for the Technology organization.

Manage Tech Exec staff meetings, OCEO reporting, communications channels, and optimize workflows to ensure the leadership team functions efficiently at scale.

  • Drive Operational Excellence: Implement data-driven performance metrics, streamline internal processes, identify productivity savings across the Technology organization, and oversee technology budget planning processes.
  • Lead Culture & Executive Communications: Communicate with and influence senior executive leadership regarding matters of strategic importance. Direct internal Technology communications (e.g., Tech Pulse blog, Intranet Hub, global Check-Ins) and engagement initiatives. Negotiate and compromise with internal and external parties to accept new approaches.
  • Build and Develop the OCTO Team: Lead, develop, and expand the Office of the CTO team. Provide guidance, coaching, and training to employees across the Company within your area of expertise.

You Have:

  • Minimum 15+ years of experience in a fast-paced technology, product management, or strategy operations environment.
  • Deep expertise in driving complex, cross-functional initiatives (e.g., enterprise AI integrations, strategic transformations, or organizational change) and translating business goals into actionable technology OKRs.
  • Proven capability to build, manage, and scale high-performing operational teams and establish data-driven operational cadences (e.g., OCEO reporting, automated playbooks, standard operating procedures).
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a key decision maker and proxy to C-suite executives, successfully managing multi-million dollar technology budgets and influencing across complex, matrixed environments.
  • Experience solving extremely difficult problems, utilizing significant conceptualizing and reasoning to improve existing processes or create novel systems that drive competitive advantage.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, balancing multiple priorities at once, while maintaining professionalism and calm.
  • Preferred Product Management, Technology or Consulting background. - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration or equivalent experience.
