Responsibilities

Reporting to the USA Health System Chief Nursing Officer, directly oversees the nursing operations for Providence Hospital and maintains comprehensive knowledge of hospital activities working closely with Hospital Administrators, medical staff, department chairpersons, and department heads.

• Plans, develops, and maintains programs that support the mission, uphold the philosophy, and achieve the objectives of the University of South Alabama Health System’s nursing operations.
• Maintains operational plans to monitor, support, and sustain the economic health of all hospital nursing areas.
• Assists department heads in budget development, ensures fiscal responsibility, and oversees the budget process for assigned departments.
• Establishes and maintains policies and processes that promote effective communication with patients, families, and staff; support conflict or complaint resolution; and uphold patients’ rights and responsibilities.
• Selects and hires qualified personnel for management positions.
• Develops and maintains the organizational structure and functional alignment of nursing operations across all hospital facilities.
• Completes system-wide projects and serves on system-wide committees.
• Holds accountability for the professional practice of nursing in all nursing department.
• Delegates appropriate responsibilities to Department Heads.
• Facilitates effective communication among hospital administrators, medical staff, department chairs, department heads, and employees.
• Promotes USA Health goals and objectives within the community.
• Reviews and acts on agency reports and recommendations that impact the institution.
• Directs the development and implementation of administrative policies and procedures that support employee growth and development and meet patients’ physical and emotional needs.
• Leads initiatives to achieve goals related to controlling health care costs.
• Applies appropriate personnel policies in hiring, training, coaching, and disciplining employees.
• Ensures compliance with accreditation and inspection agencies, as well as applicable laws and regulations.
• Collaborates with CEO, System CNO, COO and Department Heads to develop hospital-wide programs, policies, and procedures that support the mission and align with the required scope and level of patient care.
• Develops and implements programs for personnel evaluation, patient care evaluations, and management evaluations for all responsible departments.
• Creates a safe work environment that motivates employees and supports high productivity.
• Sets expectations and develops plans and processes to assess, measure, and improve the quality of management, clinical, and support activities.
• Participates in interdisciplinary and interdepartmental performance improvement initiatives.
• Promotes a patient- and family-centered approach to care.
• Fosters collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary team members to optimize patient care outcomes.
• Encourages the use of evidence-based practice.
• Develops strategies to enhance nursing recruitment and retention.
• Collaborates to ensure quality and safety outcomes that support safe, effective patient care.
• Promotes teamwork and collaboration among physicians and staff across the hospital.
• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the organization’s scope, complexity, and the authority and responsibilities of the position.
• Maintains knowledge of the major patient populations served by the hospital and the scope and complexity of their clinical needs.
• Possesses—or actively pursues—the educational and experiential qualifications expected of leadership peers.
• Engages in ongoing professional development through continuing education, conferences, and other learning opportunities to maintain and expand knowledge of hospital administration.
• Ensures that management objectives and patient care needs are consistently met, including during evenings, nights, and weekends.
• Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements.
• Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
• Regular and prompt attendance.
• Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
• Related duties as assigned.

Additional Information

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree in nursing, business, hospital administration or related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and 7 years of professional nursing experience, 4 of which were in a managerial/administrative capacity. -OR-
• Bachelor's Degree in nursing from an accredited institution and 8 years of professional nursing experience, 6 of which were in a managerial/administrative capacity.
• RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama. Required Upon Hire.
• Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
