The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) – Oncology provides strategic leadership, governance, and oversight for all oncology nursing services within a tertiary cancer care hospital. The role ensures excellence in patient-centered oncology care, compliance with Nigerian healthcare regulations, and alignment with international oncology nursing best practices.
The CNO will leverage JAPADA (Joint Academic/Professional Advanced Development in Administration) experience to strengthen nursing leadership systems, optimize oncology clinical workflows, and drive continuous quality improvement across chemotherapy units, oncology wards, infusion centers, ICUs, surgical oncology, and palliative care services.
Lead and manage oncology nursing services across:
Chemotherapy and infusion units
Oncology inpatient wards
ICU and high-dependency units
Surgical oncology services
Radiation therapy support services
Palliative and supportive care units
Develop and implement oncology-specific nursing policies and clinical protocols.
Oversee staffing models tailored to oncology acuity levels.
Promote compassionate, patient-centered cancer care.
Drive a culture of ethical practice, safety, and accountability.
Ensure oncology nursing services meet national and international oncology care standards.
Lead oncology-focused clinical audits and safety reviews.
Oversee medication safety practices for chemotherapy and high-risk oncology drugs.
Strengthen Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) compliance within immunocompromised patient environments.
Monitor adverse event reporting and implement corrective actions.
Collaborate with Quality Assurance teams to enhance cancer care outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Ensure compliance with:
Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) regulations
Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) guidelines
Hospital accreditation standards
Oncology treatment and chemotherapy administration protocols
Develop and enforce policies on:
Chemotherapy administration
Safe handling of cytotoxic drugs
Oncology staffing ratios
Clinical governance and patient safety
Mentor oncology nurse leaders, unit heads, and frontline oncology nurses.
Coordinate continuing professional development (CPD) programs specific to oncology nursing.
Implement JAPADA-aligned leadership frameworks to strengthen nursing administration systems.
Promote advanced certifications in oncology nursing and chemotherapy handling.
Establish succession planning and leadership pipelines within nursing teams.
Contribute to oncology service line expansion and strategic growth plans.
Collaborate with:
Oncologists and hematologists
Pharmacists (chemotherapy safety)
Facility management (oncology environment standards)
Infection control teams
IT/EMR teams for clinical documentation optimization
Lead initiatives to improve:
Nursing workflow efficiency
Treatment turnaround times
Patient education and survivorship support
Develop and monitor oncology nursing KPIs, including:
Medication error rates
Infection rates
Patient satisfaction scores
Staff retention and competency levels
Prepare quarterly executive reports for the CEO/CMD.
Identify operational risks and implement mitigation strategies.
Ensure data-driven decision-making in nursing workforce planning.
Bachelors degree in Nursing (BNSc or equivalent).
Masters degree in Nursing Administration, Oncology Nursing, Healthcare Management, or related field (strongly preferred).
JAPADA (or equivalent advanced nursing administration/leadership program) experience mandatory
10–15 years progressive nursing experience, including senior leadership roles in oncology or tertiary hospitals.
Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
Strong knowledge of oncology nursing standards, chemotherapy protocols, and regulatory compliance.
Proven track record of leading large multidisciplinary nursing teams.
