The Public Health branch at the Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) offers opportunities to lead and advance initiatives that protect and promote the health of all Nova Scotians. As Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH), you will play a vital leadership role in protecting and improving the health and well being of communities across the province. Reporting to the Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness and accountable to the Minister, you will provide trusted, evidence based medical and public health leadership during both routine operations and times of urgency.
This role is ideal for a purpose driven physician leader who is passionate about health promotion, disease prevention, and health protection—and who values collaboration, transparency, and public trust. You will work across government, health system partners, communities, First Nations, and national and international forums to influence policies and actions that shape the social, environmental, and economic determinants of health.

This senior executive role is primarily office based in Halifax, with regular engagement across the province and periodic travel at the national level. The Chief Medical Officer of Health works in a dynamic and highly visible environment, requiring the ability to manage complex medical, scientific, and policy issues.
The position involves significant mental and decision making demands, including synthesizing complex and evolving information, often under time pressures and heightened public and media scrutiny. The role requires availability outside regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, and participation in an on call rotation with other provincial Medical Officers of Health.
The CMOH regularly engages with government leaders, health system partners, communities, and the media, and must be comfortable navigating sensitive or controversial issues while maintaining public trust. Travel to represent Nova Scotia at provincial, federal provincial territorial, or scientific meetings is required.

Salary Range:$11,044.41 - $13,805.52 Bi-Weekly
