Job Description

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the senior physician executive for Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital and is responsible for promoting excellence in clinical care, research, and education at the hospital. In collaboration with the regional CMO and other medical and hospital leaders, the hospital CMO will create the vision and strategic plan for hospital clinical activities. The hospital CMO will serve as an advocate for the hospital and promote consistently high standards for performance in clinical care, education, research, financial and operational performance in

keeping with Corewell Health's mission, vision, and values.

The CMO is the highest hospital physician clinical authority working in a dyad relationship with the hospital Chief Nursing Officer. The CMO will lead physician and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) engagement and alignment, operational improvements, participate in CARTS alignment as necessary, determine best practice models for care delivery, and collaborate to lead all aspects of provider wellbeing, data, quality outcomes, credentialing/privileging, including promoting professionalism and behaviors consistent with Corewell Health's values.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

  • Provide executive leadership for quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical performance initiatives.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, state, and federal requirements.

  • Monitor and improve clinical quality metrics, patient outcomes, and performance benchmarks.

  • Lead efforts related to infection prevention, patient safety event review, and risk reduction.

  • Promote evidence-based clinical practice and standardized care pathways.

Medical Staff Leadership

  • Serve as the primary administrative partner to the Medical Executive Committee and medical staff leadership.

  • Build strong physician engagement and alignment across employed and independent providers.

  • Support medical staff credentialing, privileging, peer review, and professional practice evaluation processes.

  • Address physician concerns and facilitate conflict resolution when needed.

  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and collaboration.

Strategic Leadership

  • Participate in hospital strategic planning and growth initiatives.

  • Evaluate opportunities for service line development and clinical program expansion.

  • Support system-wide strategic priorities and physician integration efforts.

  • Collaborate with community physicians and healthcare partners to strengthen referral relationships.

Operational Excellence

  • Partner with operational leaders to improve efficiency, throughput, patient experience, and resource utilization.

  • Utilize data and analytics to drive clinical and operational decision-making.

  • Support initiatives related to value-based care, population health, and care transformation.

  • Assist in emergency preparedness and clinical crisis response planning.

Physician Recruitment, Retention & Development

  • Partner with physician recruitment teams to identify workforce needs and attract high-quality physicians.

  • Support onboarding, mentoring, and professional development programs.

  • Promote physician wellness and engagement initiatives.

  • Participate in succession planning and leadership development efforts.

Graduate Medical Education & Academic Programs

  • Support residency training programs and medical education initiatives.

  • Foster an environment of teaching, learning, and clinical research.

  • Collaborate with academic partners and physician faculty to advance educational excellence.

Qualifications

Required

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).

  • Board Certification in an ABMS or AOA recognized specialty.

  • Unrestricted Michigan medical license or eligibility for licensure.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive physician leadership experience.

  • Demonstrated success leading quality, patient safety, and physician engagement initiatives.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred

  • Previous experience as a Chief Medical Officer, Associate CMO, Medical Director, Department Chair, or equivalent physician leadership role.

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or related field.

  • Experience within an integrated health system.

  • Experience with community hospital operations and graduate medical education programs.
