Job Description

About Derbarl

The Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) was established in 1974 and is the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health service provider in Western Australia, providing care to over 20,000 Aboriginal patients across four clinics in East Perth, Mirrabooka, Maddington and Midland. Our staff enable the delivery of culturally responsive primary health services, focusing on prevention, early intervention, comprehensive care and care coordination including chronic disease management. We are in an exciting phase of growth, innovation and service transformation — and we’re seeking an exceptional medical leader to help shape the next chapter.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to oversee clinical governance, lead our multidisciplinary medical workforce, and strengthen the delivery of high-quality, culturally grounded primary health care. As our most senior GP, you will balance 50% clinical practice with 50% strategic leadership, governance and relationship management, ensuring our clinics operate at the highest standards of safety, quality and community-centred care. This role is ideal for a medical leader who is passionate about Aboriginal health, committed to excellence, and ready to influence system-wide outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Provide outstanding clinical leadership:

  • Deliver comprehensive, trauma-informed, culturally appropriate medical care.
  • Mentor, supervise and support GPs, Registrars and medical staff.
  • Uphold RACGP standards, clinical governance frameworks and risk management processes.

Drive quality, safety and service improvement:

  • Lead accreditation, clinical audit programs and infection control standards.
  • Strengthen evidence-based practice and continuous improvement across clinics.

Shape strategy and service design:

  • Work with the CEO, Board and Executive Team on future care models.
  • Advocate for improved access, partnerships and integrated care pathways.

Represent Derbarl at the highest level:

  • Engage with state health partners, community stakeholders and sector networks.
  • Attend external meetings, forums and conferences as a key clinical voice.

About You

You are a respected medical leader who brings:

Essential

  • Fellowship with RACGP or ACRRM.
  • Minimum 4 years’ senior medical leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in governance, strategy, risk and compliance.
  • Strong mentoring and communication skills.
  • Commitment to culturally safe, trauma-informed care.

Desirable

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.
  • Experience working within ACCHOs or Aboriginal primary health settings.

Other Requirements

  • Current WWCC, National Police Clearance (within 6 months), WA Driver’s Licence.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Successful Pre-employment Health Assessment.

Why Join Derbarl?

  • Make a profound impact on community health outcomes.
  • Work within a supportive, culturally grounded and values-driven organisation.
  • Lead clinical transformation across multiple metropolitan sites.
  • Attractive executive remuneration package.
  • Opportunity to influence policy, research, preventative health and service design.

This is more than a leadership role — it’s a chance to be part of a legacy and help create healthier futures for Aboriginal families across Perth. A copy of the full Position Description can be obtained by contacting People Services Team on 1800 311 888 or work@dyhs.org.au
