The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking an accomplished academic pathologist to serve as Chief of the Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathology Service. This is a unique leadership opportunity to shape the future of GI pathology within a nationally recognized NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center committed to advancing diagnostic excellence, translational research, and multidisciplinary cancer care.
The successful candidate will provide strategic clinical, academic, and scientific leadership for the GI Pathology Service while helping advance Roswell Park’s mission of innovation, discovery, and compassionate patient care. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside highly subspecialized multidisciplinary oncology teams while contributing to a broad spectrum of complex and intellectually engaging oncologic pathology cases across both in-house and consultation services.
We are seeking a visionary physician leader who is passionate about diagnostic pathology, translational research, mentorship, and building a nationally distinguished GI pathology program within a deeply collaborative academic environment.
What You’ll Do
• Lead the Gastrointestinal Pathology Service and establish strategic clinical, operational, academic, and research priorities
• Provide expert diagnostic interpretation across a broad spectrum of GI oncologic pathology cases
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary oncology teams including GI surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, and translational research programs
• Support high-quality pathology services that advance patient-centered cancer diagnosis and treatment planning
• Foster innovation, operational excellence, and quality improvement initiatives within the division
• Define and advance the scientific vision for the GI pathology program
• Develop and support translational and clinical research initiatives in collaboration with multidisciplinary investigators
• Pursue and grow independent academic and translational research programs with protected research time and institutional support
• Utilize Roswell Park’s extensive shared resources, biorepositories, molecular platforms, and advanced analytical infrastructure
• Collaborate on clinical trials, translational investigations, and department-sponsored pathology research initiatives
• Mentor and support faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, and trainees within the pathology and oncology programs
• Foster a collaborative academic culture emphasizing mentorship, innovation, and continuous professional growth
• Participate in educational conferences, multidisciplinary tumor boards, and institutional academic initiatives
• Strengthen partnerships across pathology, oncology, surgery, translational science, and institutional leadership
• Support strategic departmental growth and enhance the national visibility of the GI pathology program
• Foster a culture aligned with High Reliability Organization principles emphasizing accountability, scientific rigor, patient safety, and teamwork

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is nationally recognized for excellence in oncologic pathology, molecular diagnostics, translational research, and precision oncology. Faculty work within a highly subspecialized and collaborative academic environment supporting innovative cancer diagnosis, biomarker discovery, and multidisciplinary patient care.

What You’ll Bring
• MD, DO, or equivalent degree with Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology and/or Gastrointestinal Pathology expertise
• Demonstrated academic and leadership accomplishments consistent with a senior faculty appointment
• Strong diagnostic expertise in gastrointestinal oncologic pathology
• Experience leading or contributing to translational research, academic pathology programs, or multidisciplinary oncology initiatives
• Commitment to advancing clinical excellence, innovation, and collaborative patient-centered cancer care
• Interest in developing and expanding independent or collaborative translational research programs
• Passion for mentorship, faculty development, and academic leadership
• Executive presence, strategic vision, and the ability to foster collaboration across clinical, scientific, and institutional teams
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills within multidisciplinary academic environments

Required Education and Experience
License and Certification Requirement
1. License to practice as a Medical Doctor in the State of New York as required for the area of expertise.
2. Possession of a valid medical specialty certificate in area of expertise
Education and Experience
Medical Doctor degree as required for the area of expertise, and the equivalent of five (5) year of full-time experience in the area of expertise
NOTE:
Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited school, college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Candidates must be AP or AP/CP board certified or eligible and will be required to obtain a New York State Medical license.
• Subspecialty expertise and/or fellowship training in Gastrointestinal (GI) • Pathology to support expansion of the Institute’s clinical and research programs in these areas.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience
• Minimum professorship rank of Associate Professor
