Chief Estimator

Location: Detroit, MI

Compensation: $150,000–$170,000 DOE

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Chief Estimator to lead estimating operations for an established electrical contractor in the Detroit market. This individual will play a key leadership role in overseeing the estimating team, managing the bid process, and ensuring projects are accurately evaluated and competitively priced.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in electrical construction estimating, extensive knowledge of commercial and industrial electrical projects, and the ability to lead, mentor, and develop an estimating team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the estimating department, providing direction, guidance, and support to the estimating team.
• Manage the full estimating process, from initial project review and takeoffs through final bid submission.
• Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and contract documents to identify project requirements and potential risks.
• Develop accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates.
• Establish and maintain consistent estimating procedures, standards, and best practices.
• Collaborate with project management, operations, and executive leadership to evaluate project opportunities and bid strategies.
• Review estimates for accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness before submission.
• Mentor and develop estimators, helping improve team performance and estimating capabilities.
• Build and maintain relationships with general contractors, vendors, suppliers, and industry partners.
• Support project handoff from estimating to operations to ensure a smooth transition.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in electrical construction estimating.
• Strong understanding of electrical construction methods, materials, labor requirements, and project costs.
• Previous experience leading, managing, or mentoring an estimating team.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
• Experience preparing estimates for commercial, industrial, or other large-scale electrical construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of estimating software and industry tools.
• Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
• Ability to manage multiple bids, deadlines, and competing priorities.
