Job Description

Create your best future and join Westpac as a Chief Engineer.

What’s the role?

Westpac Pacific Banking Technology is entering one of the most significant transformation periods in its history. After years of limited investment, we are modernising our technology estate end to end. This includes upgrading our core banking platform and switch, introducing new digital, treasury, trade, financial markets, international payments, corporate loan onboarding and credit risk capabilities, and uplifting our data warehouse and broader application landscape. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of banking across the Pacific in a role with genuine breadth, visibility and impact.

Pacific Banking is unique in its scope and exposure. It is the only line of business at Westpac where technology leaders can influence the full banking value chain, spanning payments, retail, corporate and commercial banking, financial markets, EFTPOS, ATMs and digital experiences, across two jurisdictions, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Alongside platform modernisation, we are strengthening the technology control environment and modernising engineering practices, tools and operational processes to build more resilient and sustainable platforms.

The Chief Engineer, Pacific Banking is a pivotal leadership role at the centre of this transformation. You’ll lead the engineering agenda across a complex banking environment, shaping technology strategy, architecture, delivery and resilience. You’ll combine strategic influence with hands on leadership, driving modern engineering practices, strengthening risk and controls, guiding major platform decisions and building a high performing engineering culture that will define the future of banking in the Pacific.

This is a permanent role based in Sydney, Warrane, Gadigal Country, with hybrid working.

What do I need?

• Strong engineering leadership across large scale, complex technology environments.

• Confidence setting technical direction and guiding solution design and integration across internal and vendor platforms.

• Practical experience embedding modern engineering practices such as secure by design, DevSecOps, CI/CD, automation and observability.

• A track record lifting operational resilience, incident practices and technology risk and control environments.

• The ability to lead, grow and develop high performing teams and communities of practice.
