Summary
The Chief Engineer role is vital to our mission of providing outstanding engineering services to the rail industry. This position requires a visionary leader who can drive technical excellence and foster a collaborative, innovative work environment. The Chief Engineer at RailPros is a senior technical and strategic leader responsible for advancing the company’s engineering practice, ensuring high-quality delivery of rail engineering solutions, and driving profitable growth across the engineering lines of service. As a critical member of the leadership team, the Chief Engineer champions technical excellence, operational integrity, and client satisfaction while fostering innovation and professional development within RailPros’ engineering organization. In this role, the Chief Engineer also serves as a visible, external-facing leader building and strengthening client relationships, representing RailPros’ technical capabilities, and advancing the firm’s engineering services with freight, passenger, and transit clients across North America.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Guide and support Lines of Service to ensure that they have the technical capabilities and resources to meet Company objectives
- Directly manage Line of Service Leaders across all engineering disciplines to ensure cohesive and effective team operations
- Guide and support implementation, maintenance, and enforcement of Company Quality Management System
- Lead Regional Quality Managers who are responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the Company Design Quality Plan for each Region
- Guide, advise, and assist Project Delivery System (PDS) Team in maintaining the PDS to stay current with best practices
- Maintain Engineering Standard Operating Procedures
- Continuously evaluate and refine engineering processes to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality
- Implement best practices and innovative solutions to optimize project workflows and outcomes
- Arrange and conduct training programs on technical subjects to enhance the skills and knowledge of engineering staff
- Provide ongoing consulting with Project Managers and Discipline Leaders as requested
- Stay abreast of the latest industry trends and technologies, integrating relevant advancements into training curricula
- Keep up-to-date with the latest engineering standards, software, techniques, and methods, working with lines of service to implement or communicate them
- Support major business pursuits by providing technical expertise and strategic insights during proposal development and client presentations
- Identify and capitalize on new opportunities for growth within the rail industry, expanding the company's market presence
- Actively advance RailPros’ engineering services by serving as a visible technical ambassador at industry conferences, professional forums, and client events, presenting project experience, technical innovations, and best practices that position RailPros as a leading rail engineering service provider
- Promote RailPros’ technical capabilities through thought leadership, including conference presentations, panel participation, technical papers, and industry committee involvement
- Assist with the evaluation and integration of business mergers and acquisitions, ensuring seamless incorporation of new entities and capabilities
- Act as a key decision-maker in high-level discussions and initiatives, representing the technical arm of the organization
QualificationsKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of the engineering industry and relevant regulations
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
- Strong leadership and managerial skills
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in quality control procedures, project management methodologies, and process improvement strategies.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- Professional engineering license (PE)
- 20+ years prior engineering experience
- Proven leadership experience in engineering or project management roles

- Extensive experience in the rail industry, with a proven track record in engineering, CM, and PM/CM roles.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in engineering or a related field
- Professional engineering license in multiple states
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- Established relationships with railroad clients
