Job Description - Chief Detailer

Salary Range - $100,000.00 - $120,000.00

Location - Concord or Grimsby

Position Summary

The Chief Detailer is responsible for leading and developing the Rebar Division’s Detailing Department. This role oversees departmental workflow, productivity, quality, project scheduling, and employee development while ensuring projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.

The Chief Detailer works closely with Sales, Estimating, Contract Management, Engineering, Project Management, and Placing to coordinate project requirements, resolve issues, identify changes, and support successful project delivery. The role also provides technical guidance on complex projects and identifies opportunities for rebar optimization and steel savings.

Position Functions

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, coach, and develop the Detailing team to achieve high levels of productivity, quality, and customer service.
• Participate in the hiring, onboarding, training, and development of Detailers.
• Allocate work based on project requirements, deadlines, and departmental capacity.
• Monitor team performance and provide regular feedback and performance reviews.
• Address performance issues and employee concerns as required.
• Promote teamwork, accountability, and the company’s core values.

Project & Department Management

• Review incoming projects with Sales and coordinate the effective assignment of detailing work.
• Participate in internal project start-up meetings and review project scope, requirements, and timelines.
• Develop detailing schedules for larger projects and monitor progress to ensure deadlines are met.
• Monitor project hours and tonnage against estimates and identify potential issues or changes.
• Communicate project concerns and changes with Estimating, Contract Management, Sales, Engineering, and other relevant departments.
• Coordinate external detailing resources when required.
• Attend customer or job-site meetings for larger projects as required.

Productivity, Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Establish and monitor departmental productivity and performance metrics.
• Review timesheets, tonnage, hours, and project performance on a regular basis.
• Lead weekly productivity meetings and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and resource allocation.
• Prepare monthly departmental performance reports for Senior Management.
• Monitor detailing quality and implement corrective actions when required.
• Develop and improve departmental procedures, standards, and best practices.

Technical & Value Engineering

• Provide technical guidance and support to Detailers on complex projects.
• Assist with the detailing and review of key projects as required.
• Review rebar details and identify opportunities to improve constructability, efficiency, and material utilization.
• Work with Design Engineers to identify and communicate opportunities for steel savings and value engineering.

Customer & Cross-Functional Relationships

• Build effective working relationships with customers and internal departments.
• Assist with customer service issues related to detailing and project deliverables.
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure consistent, high-quality project execution.
• Communicate project requirements, issues, and opportunities clearly and in a timely manner.

Working Conditions

The successful candidate will work 40+ hours per week primarily in an office environment, with occasional travel to construction sites and customer locations.

Frequent computer use is required. Occasional exposure to outdoor elements and construction-site noise may occur.

Preferred Qualifications

3+ years of experience leading a rebar detailing team

Proficient in Rebar Cadd

Minimum 5 years of experience in rebar detailing, construction, project management, or a related field

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is an asset.

Strong knowledge of rebar detailing and placement drawings.

Experience with construction processes and project coordination.

Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and develop a technical team.

Experience managing workloads, schedules, and competing project priorities.

Ability to monitor project productivity, hours, tonnage, and performance against estimates.

Ability to identify project changes, resolve issues, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Experience with value engineering, rebar optimization, or identifying steel savings is an asset.

Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Strong understanding of cost control, budgeting, and project financial performance.
