Job Description

Job Title: Chief Corporate Services Officer
Location: Alberta (Multi-site operations; Edmonton-based with travel)
Type: Full-Time, Executive

All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The Position:

Our client, an Alberta-based construction company, is seeking a Chief Corporate Services Officer (CCSO) to provide executive leadership and oversight for the organization's core enterprise services, including Human Resources, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), Information Technology, and Legal.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the CCSO is a key member of the executive leadership team and is accountable for ensuring the organization operates safely, legally, ethically, and effectively across all Alberta operations. This role provides independent governance, risk, and enablement leadership to support the organization's operational excellence and long-term growth in a high-risk, asset-intensive construction environment.

What You'll Do:

Executive Leadership & Governance

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO on enterprise governance, workforce, safety, legal, and systems matters.
  • Establish and maintain corporate governance frameworks, policies, and standards.
  • Provide executive-level risk perspective to balance operational delivery and revenue growth objectives.
  • Partner with the COO, CFO, and Chief Revenue Officer to ensure alignment between corporate services and business strategy.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Serve as the executive accountable for health, safety, and environmental performance across all worksites.
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta OHS, WCB, and environmental regulations.
  • Champion a safety-first culture aligned with heavy construction and aggregate operations.
  • Oversee serious incident management, investigation, escalation, and regulatory reporting.
  • Embed safety leadership and accountability into management practices.

Human Resources & Workforce Strategy

  • Lead enterprise workforce strategy to support frontline operations, skilled trades, and leadership roles.
  • Provide oversight of talent acquisition, workforce planning, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Ensure HR practices align with legal, safety, and operational requirements in a field-based workforce.
  • Oversee employee and labour relations in partnership with operational leadership.

Legal Oversight & Risk Management

  • Provide executive oversight of all legal matters, utilizing external counsel as required.
  • Ensure effective management of contractual risk related to customers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Oversee compliance with employment law, commercial agreements, and regulatory obligations.
  • Act as escalation authority for significant claims, disputes, or regulatory issues.

Information Technology & Systems Enablement

  • Oversee IT governance, cybersecurity, and data protection.
  • Ensure technology systems effectively support field operations, safety reporting, workforce management, and enterprise decision-making.
  • Align technology investments with business and operational needs, noting this is not a hands-on CIO role.

Enterprise Risk & Compliance

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate non-financial enterprise risks.
  • Ensure consistency and effectiveness of organizational policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Support audits, insurance reviews, and regulatory inspections.
  • Promote ethical conduct and corporate responsibility across the organization.

Mandatories:

  • Possess senior leadership experience in construction, heavy industry, energy, infrastructure, mining, or a similarly high-risk operational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and accountability for safety, people, compliance, and enterprise risk at a senior level.
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a private-sector, owner-operator, or entrepreneurial environment.
  • Bring strong leadership presence with the ability to engage credibly with frontline employees and executives.
  • Use exceptional judgment, decision-making, and communication skills, particularly in high-pressure situations.
  • Possess the ability to balance governance and oversight with operational practicality and business realities. This role requires comfort with ambiguity and ownership of outcomes.

Additional Assets (Highly Valued):

  • Senior leadership background in Police, RCMP, or Military with subsequent private-sector or commercial experience.
  • Deep experience leading large, dispersed teams and managing critical incidents.
  • Safety, risk, or leadership credentials (e.g., NCSO, CRSP, senior command or staff college training).
  • Experience working closely with legal counsel, regulators, and insurers.
