The Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) leads and is accountable for the clinical vision, strategy, and day-to-day operations of all adult residential and extended care services at Cumberland Heights. The CCO ensures all clinical programming is of the highest quality, fully compliant with applicable laws and standards, and directly supports the organization's mission of transforming lives, providing hope and healing to those affected by alcohol and drug addiction.

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP & VISION

  • Partners with the CEO and Leadership Team to develop, articulate, and implement a clinical vision that is consistent with the organization's mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Translates organizational strategy into actionable clinical goals; directs clinical management and staff toward achievement of those goals.
  • Identifies emerging trends in addiction treatment and integrates state-of-the-art practices into programming.
  • Recommends and champions improvements to the quality and delivery of clinical services.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & OVERSIGHT

  • Creates, develops, implements, supervises, and evaluates all clinical program services, including the design and launch of new programs and service lines.
  • Oversees daily clinical and administrative operations of all adult residential and extended care programs through the Program Directors and Clinical Coordinators.
  • Ensures a welcoming, safe, and healing environment is consistently maintained for every patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
  • Provides clinical supervision to clinical management staff in accordance with applicable licensure and clinical privileges.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL COORDINATION & CONTINUITY OF CARE

  • Collaborates closely with leaders in Admissions, Outpatient Services, Nursing, Medical and Operations to ensure a smooth and seamless continuum of care for all patients.
  • Coordinates clinical efforts with Quality/Risk Management and Marketing/Referral Relations to proactively address and resolve patient, referral, family, and staff concerns.
  • Coordinates with Quality Management and Utilization Review to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, JCAHO standards, and third-party payor contract requirements.
  • Partners with Leadership staff across departments to drive interdepartmental integration of services.
  • Attends clinical management staff meetings regularly and as needed.

RESOURCE & STAFF MANAGEMENT

  • Manages both material and human resources through clinical management staff, working closely with the CFO and Director of HR to ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
  • In partnership with Human Resources and clinical management, oversees and participates in the recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and training of clinical employees.
  • Plans, assigns, and directs work for direct reports; conducts performance reviews; addresses complaints; and resolves disciplinary matters, up to and including terminations.
  • Ensures proper handling and distribution of company funds within the scope of the role.

STAFF TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • In collaboration with Human Resources, assesses ongoing training and development needs across all clinical staff and co-designs programming to address identified gaps.
  • Partners with HR and staff development teams to recruit, onboard, and orient new clinical employees, ensuring alignment with organizational culture and clinical standards.
  • Teaches and models state-of-the-art clinical and management skills relevant to the patient population served.
  • Works with HR to establish and maintain continuing education pathways that support licensure renewal, professional growth, and retention.
  • Presents on behalf of Cumberland Heights to diverse audiences, including large and small external groups.
  • Maintains and models a high standard of confidentiality for all company and patient information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policy.

Requirements

Education & Licensure

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Independent clinical licensure required (LCSW, LPC-MHSP, or equivalent).

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive behavioral healthcare experience, the majority of which is addiction-specific; must include at least 5 years of direct clinical practice and a significant tenure in senior management.
  • Nonprofit residential healthcare experience and familiarity with Joint Commission requirements preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); working knowledge of HRIS platforms (e.g., Workday, ADP, or equivalent); familiarity with AI tools and a willingness to adopt emerging technologies that support clinical documentation, staff development, and operational efficiency.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and competing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and judgment skills.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills; able to present and teach effectively to individuals, small groups, and large audiences.
  • Ability to analyze complex clinical and organizational situations and make sound, timely decisions while recognizing when consultation is appropriate.
  • Ability to work calmly and professionally in high-stress environments and with individuals in crisis.
  • Knowledge of age/cultural/population-specific characteristics as applied to patient care.
  • Knowledge of Twelve Step philosophy and its application in a clinical addiction treatment setting.
  • If in recovery: minimum two years of verifiable abstinence required; five years preferred. Active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.
