Summary

Plans, directs, and supervises the City's building inspection activities.

Examples of duties

  • Develop and establish policies insuring the efficient operation of the City's building inspection activities;
  • Select, train, and supervise personnel directly or through subordinate supervisors, establish performance standards, evaluate the performance of
  • subordinate staff, establish work priorities, goals, objectives, and schedules;
  • Develop and administer public relations effort to inform citizens or internal staff of services provided, promote effective citizens and staff relations;
  • Recommend revisions of building electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes;
  • Prepare and administer operating budget;
  • Perform related duties as directed.

Qualifications

Completion of a bachelor degree in engineering, architecture, public administration or a related field with an additional five to seven years of experience in building construction or inspection, including management experience; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

International Code Council Certified Building Official

Valid Current Driver's License

Supplemental information

Knowledge of:

  • Pertinent local and state codes and ordinances;
  • Enforcement procedures;
  • Building construction methods and practices.

Ability to:

  • Read and interpret codes and ordinances;
  • Prepare reports;
  • Read and interpret building construction plans and specifications;
  • Supervise the work of others;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with other City officials, builders, and the public;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally stand and walk during the shift.
  • Occasionally climb ladders, stairs, and other inclined surfaces.
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally bend and kneel.
  • Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees.
  • Occasionally rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing.
  • Place arms above, at, and below shoulder height.
  • Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
