Summary:
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) serves as ECR’s senior instructional leader and is responsible for the leadership, oversight, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s academic programs, instructional systems, curriculum, assessment practices, and educational initiatives. The CAO oversees academic operations across all instructional programs and student populations and supports organizational goals related to student achievement, compliance, equity, staffing, and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight to lead ECR in achieving its mission and upholding its core values through effective leadership and management.
- Provide guidance and advice to the Executive Director regarding matters related to education and administration.
- Leads curriculum development, implementation, and assessment through an equity lens for the entire school, including all specialized programs and academies.
- Lead the development, implementation, and measurement of the school’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and other plans that set the organization’s instructional goals; report on outcomes to the Board and stakeholders.
- Oversee and sustain ECR’s distinctive academic programs, including the School for Advanced Studies (SAS), AP/Honors, STEAM Academy, Careers in Entertainment (CIE), Career Technical Education (CTE), Royal Scholars, Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA), the Flex Program, and Independent Study.
- Manage and strengthen dual enrollment and college credit partnerships, ensuring compliance with UC/CSU transferability requirements and relevant higher education regulations.
- Oversee professional development and ensure that the professional development plan prepares teachers to master CCSS and other state content standards, aligned with the Single Plan for Student Achievement and the District’s Master Plan for English Learners and Standard English Learners.
- Implement, supervise, and monitor core and supplemental instructional programs leading to continuous student learning improvement and student mastery of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and other state content standards.
- Develop and distribute systemic instructional programs to improve instruction across all grade levels and academic pathways.
- Support school leadership teams in developing long and short-range plans for academic achievement aligned with each program’s unique goals and student population.
- Accountable for the strategic, operational, and fiscal performance of ECR’s academic programs, including alignment with the school’s LCFF priorities, enrollment and staffing models, instructional expenditures, and approved budget goals
- Provide direct supervision, coaching, and evaluation of Administrative Directors to ensure alignment with ECR’s instructional goals, compliance requirements, and organizational priorities.
- Develop, support, guide, and evaluate teachers, counselors, and other instructional staff to ensure the academic achievement of all student subgroups and targeted student populations.
- Provide instructional support by building teacher capacity in implementing effective strategies, intervention systems, and equitable access practices for all student subgroups and targeted populations, including English Learners, foster youth, unhoused youth, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, standard English learners, gifted and talented students, students achieving below grade level, and students with disabilities.
- Develop with senior leadership, a strategic plan inclusive of goals and strategies to ensure equitable, standards-aligned instruction for every student.
- Use data-driven practices, evaluation systems, and student outcome analysis to monitor instructional effectiveness, support teacher and administrator development, and drive continuous improvement across all student subgroups and academic programs.
- Serve as an instructional team resource to teachers, parents, and students.
- Organize, support, and oversee systems to maintain high-quality remote and alternative learning if a public health crisis or disaster event precludes or limits classroom-based instruction.
- Support the entire ECR administrative team on educational issues.
- Create and implement processes for the continuous improvement of instructional leadership in academic and educational instruction.
- Recommend and implement student intervention or disciplinary actions and implement and monitor attendance initiatives in accordance with the Education Code and ECR’s student responsibility code.
- Collaborate with Union leadership regarding labor relations and collective bargaining matters impacting instructional staff, academic operations, evaluation processes, workload considerations, employee accountability, and implementation of educational initiatives.
- Represents ECR and the Executive Director as a liaison between the school and outside agencies, including higher education institutions, community partners, and state bodies.
- Assist the Executive Director in meeting state and federal mandates and ensuring instructional monitoring and compliance needs.
- Assist in formulating, interpreting, and implementing ECR’s administrative policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard from an accredited college or university
- At least four semester units in multicultural education or equivalent study
- At least five years of successful full-time public school certificated service
- At least three years as a teacher in a K–12 public school program
- A valid California K–12 Teaching Credential requiring a bachelor’s degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
- A valid Administrative Services Credential authorizing K–12 service
- A solid grasp of all aspects of operating a charter school is highly desirable
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Experience overseeing advanced academic programs, including AP, dual enrollment, or college credit-bearing courses
- Demonstrated background in arts-integrated, CTE, or career pathway learning environments
- Familiarity with charter school governance structures, LCFF and LCAP development, and compliance reporting
- Experience managing higher education partnerships and UC/CSU articulation agreements
- Proven track record using data analytics and school dashboard metrics to drive instructional decisions and close achievement gaps
- Experience leading a multi-program academic portfolio serving a diverse, high-achieving student population
