Process & Characterization Group Mission

To process high quality materials and data for Toner Delivery and Manufacturing, enabling our organization to meet our delivery goals. The group provides processing expertise from lab to production scale for all raw material and toner/developer projects for the organization.

Chemical Technician Job Description

Upon joining the group, a technician is assigned to one of the following teams based on the current needs of the organization.

  • EA Toner Pilot Plant

  • Conventional Toner Pilot Plant

  • Toner/Carrier/Developer PDT

  • Characterization Lab

Each team has a set of responsibilities (some unique and some shared with the other teams). However, individuals are required to train across all teams as requested. It is not uncommon for individuals to move back and forth between the teams due to the dynamic nature of our business.

General Job Description

  • Some chemical processing experience preferred but on the job training will be provided.

  • Light industrial equipment operation.

  • Ability to multitask.

  • Data recording.

  • Following processing instructions.

  • Interacting with engineers to define and clarify processing instructions.

  • Performing of analytical techniques.

  • Process and equipment setup/changeovers.

  • Submit samples for analysis.

  • May be required to report test results.

  • May be required to maintain documentation and procedures.

General Requirements

  • Flexibility, teamwork, and safe work habits.

  • Ability to maintain an orderly work environment.

  • Job is generally A shift, but some flexibility will be required on a as needed basis.

  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

  • Good PC skills (Word/Excel).

  • Quick study, willing to learn new skills.

  • Need to be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Pilot plant processing requires extensive physical activity, including standing for extended periods of time, carrying samples between buildings, and moderate lifting (>25 lbs).

  • Openness to the concept and application of continuous improvement.

  • Members are expected to take initiative and be committed to seeing activities through to completion.

EA and Conventional Toner Pilot Plant Description

  • Operate process equipment according to standard operating procedures and trial plans provided by engineering teams to produce model materials and conduct scale-up & latitude experiments.

  • Conventional toner pilot-scale processing (extrude, grind, classify, blend, and screen)

  • EA 20-gall and 100-gall scale processing (AC, wet sieve, wash, and dry)

  • Review processing documentation for accuracy - clarify any concerns with requesters

  • Generate data during processing and data entry

  • Continuous improvement of processes - idea generation through implementation

  • Support Semi-works production activities

  • Bottle/Cartridge filling (Per-fil and by hand)

  • W351 warehouse inventory management

  • Retrieve materials from multiple buildings for requests

  • Licensed Walkie Stackie operator

  • Ordering Supplies and Materials

  • Raw Material inventory management

  • Maintain a clean, organized work environment.

Toner/Carrier/Developer PDT Description

  • Lab scale Processing (Latex, EA, Conventional)

  • Carrier production support

  • Support Semi-works production activities

  • Pilot Plant processing as needed

  • PMC support (W216, W224, SDC)

  • Shipping (Domestic, International, Hazardous)

  • Bottle/Cartridge filling (Per-fil and by hand)

  • Label printing

  • Sample collection, submission, and data entry

  • CRUM programming / Rework

  • W143 warehouse inventory management

  • Licensed Walkie Stackie operator

  • Ordering Supplies and Materials

  • Pick up and deliver materials between multiple buildings

  • Submit conventional model material requests

  • Problem solving activities

RDE & Referee Characterization Lab Description

  • Electrical/Powder Characteristics Tribo, Charge Spectra, Conductivity, Bulk Density/Mass Flow, Cohesion, Angle of repose/fall/spatula/difference, Compressibility, Dielectrics & Resistivity, Large Particle Content /Giant Particle Content, Low Vacuum Test (soft agglomerate), Toner Blocking, Vibrating Sample Magnetometer, C-meter, Toner Flakes/Slivers

  • Particle: Size (0.02 to 2k micron), Shape, Sieving

  • Color: Wet Dep, Transmission, Opacity, Gamut Layered/Blended, Intensity/Emission, Draw Down (Wet & Dry) reflective LabCh, DE & DE2000, spectrophotometry, Flop index, Sparkle, florescence, % haze, graininess, microscope analysis

  • World-wide supplier of CSG substrates, Faraday Cages, reference toner/carrier, and most instrument consumables (particularly for the Webster complex)
