About the role:

Reporting to the Diagnostic Imaging Managers, the Charge Technologist provides clinical and operational leadership of their assigned Diagnostic Imaging service while maintaining competency and practicing within the full scope of their regulated profession. The Charge Technologist leads the team, including Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs), Registered Nurses (RNs) and student MRTs/RNs and promotes a safe, high-quality, patient-centred environment. As an experienced clinical resource, the Charge Technologist coaches the team to ensure timely, efficient and evidence-informed diagnostic imaging services.

What you will be doing:

  • Perform the full scope of practice within the applicable regulated professional designation and assigned Diagnostic Imaging modality.
  • Serve as the clinical expert and technical resource for staff within the assigned modality.
  • Develop new DI protocols in collaboration with radiologists and partners.
  • Perform additional clinical duties as required to support patient care and departmental operations.
  • Lead the team in a fast-paced healthcare environment, guiding the coordination of team workflow and mentors the team to manage competing clinical priorities.
  • Initial planning of staff schedules. To be approved by Manager.
  • Act as the first point of contact for clinical and operational issues during assigned shifts.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, mentorship and support to staff and learners.
  • Support recruitment, staff orientation, onboarding, competency assessment, scheduling and professional development.
  • Participate and support departmental planning and priorities, organizational initiatives, policy development and updates, protocol review, implementation of best practices and operational changes.
  • Support departmental business continuity and operational readiness during equipment downtime, emergency situations and service disruptions.
  • Oversee QA/QC, image quality, equipment performance, and repeat/reject analysis.
  • Promote compliance with accreditation standards, CMRITO standards, infection prevention, radiation safety, and workplace safety.
  • Ensure safety incidents, patient events, equipment concerns, near misses and workplace hazards are promptly reported, investigated and addressed.
  • Support safety inspections and manage safety reports.
  • Provide clinical leadership, mentorship, coaching and education to Diagnostic Imaging professionals, students and learners.
  • Serve as a clinical preceptor and resource for new staff, students and interdisciplinary learners.
  • Support learner orientation, competency assessment, evaluation and performance feedback, departmental education initiatives, competency programs and implementation of new equipment, software and technologies.
  • Develop and alter patient scheduling templates based on workload, patient volumes, wait times, senior leadership operational performance indicators and resource utilization.
  • Support management with operational planning, quality initiatives, budgeting, capital equipment planning and service improvement projects.
  • Monitor inventory levels, backorders, appropriate substitutions and coordinate supply management to support uninterrupted patient care.
  • Participate in data collection, audits, accreditation activities and departmental reporting requirements.

What you bring:

  • Graduate of a recognized Diagnostic Imaging program appropriate to the assigned modality.
  • Current registration and membership in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO)
  • Membership with the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) and/or Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT)
  • Maintains modality-specific certifications and competencies required to perform the duties of the position.
  • Minimum 8 years of recent clinical experience in the applicable Diagnostic Imaging modality, preferably in an acute care hospital.
  • Previous experience acting as a Charge Technologist, Lead Technologist, Clinical Resource, Preceptor or other informal leadership role is an asset.
  • Completion of a leadership or healthcare management certificate or diploma.
  • Undergraduate degree in Health Sciences, Healthcare Administration, Leadership, Education or a related field.
  • Current or previous formal supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience participating in accreditation processes (e.g., Accreditation Canada), quality improvement initiatives, Lean methodology or process improvement projects.
  • Experience with equipment procurement, implementation, optimization or capital planning.
  • Experience supporting budget planning, operational metrics and performance reporting.
  • Experience coordinating student placements and acting as a clinical educator or preceptor.
  • Participation in departmental committees, research initiatives or professional associations.
  • Certification or training in quality improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience leading change management initiatives and implementing new technologies or clinical workflows.
