Job Description

The Ministry of the Solicitor General facility includes a 100 bed Secure Treatment Unit (STU) to service the needs of incarcerated offenders with mental illness; and the STU has been designated a Schedule 1 facility under the Mental Health Act by the Minister of Health and Long Term Care. Duties
  • Facilitates recovery oriented spiritual, religious and cultural health services to clients and their families and staff.
  • Advocates for the spiritual, religious and cultural specifics and support of clients and their families.
  • Coordinates education regarding the integration of spiritual, religious and culturally appropriate care in the treatment of clients.
  • Recruits, screens, educates and supports the use of spiritual, religious and cultural peer support in program development.
  • Develops and coordinates spiritual, religious and cultural health educational seminars and activities.
  • Leads recovery-oriented spirituality groups for clients.
  • Coordinates and contributes to the spiritual, religious and cultural education of staff regarding spiritual health practices, religious and cultural specifics of the client population.
  • Completes work load measurement and data collection as required.
  • Keeps current with hospital policies and procedures and applicable legislation.
  • Participates in program and Spiritual and Cultural Health service meetings, staff development, committees and peer consultation.
  • Participates in program and Spiritual and Cultural Health research and evaluation.
  • Maintains competency regarding professional standards and spiritual therapeutic interventions by reviewing current literature, attending workshops/seminars, networking with colleagues and professional associations.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.  
  Qualifications:
  • Master level degree in divinity, religion, theology or spiritual care.
  • Training, certification and evidence of ongoing practice in a recognized spiritual/religious practice discipline relevant to the care of individuals living with a severe mental illness.
  • Sensitivity and ability to advocate for the spiritual, religious and cultural specifics with the care of clients and their families.
  • Training in principles of bereavement support and loss, experience leading bereavement support groups and providing crisis intervention regarding loss and death.
  • Training in principles of adult education, group work and community development.
  • Ability to foster compassionate, respectful and recovery oriented relationships, programs and community.
  • Awareness of wisdom teachings and principles of culturally divergent care.
  • Ability to advocate and respect diversity of clients, staff and community.
  • Awareness of principles of medical ethics or willingness to attain training.
  • Organizational and clerical abilities to coordinate the development of community and peer volunteers.
  • Awareness of relevant legislation and commitment to the principles of relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act, Privacy (PHIPPA) and the Criminal Code of Canada (Mental Disorder Provisions).
  • Advanced crisis intervention skills.
  • Strong advocacy skills.
  • Client-centered and driven approach.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals living with a mental illness and principles of a Recovery Culture.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with client, family, care givers, other professionals, volunteers and the community.
  • Ability to work in an automated environment.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression/comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression.   Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
