What You Will Do

  • Provide effective spiritual support that contributes to the wellbeing of each patient, family member, visitor, volunteer, or employee
  • Acts as an integral part of the health care team, including interacting with nursing, medical, and support staff to ensure that the appropriate levels of service are met/delivered in a timely manner.
  • Provide spiritual care that respects diversity, relative to differences in race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, philosophies, religious perspectives etc.
  • Advocate for patients by educating staff about specific religious, spiritual or cultural needs and issues of patients and families which affect their care and treatment.
  • Appropriate use of one’s professional authority as a chaplain.
  • Establish trusted spiritual care relationships with empathy, openness, and respect
  • Assists with the planning/implementation of services that provide spiritual support to the organization and community.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.
  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master's Degree Related Field of Study from accredited theological seminary (Required)
  • Completion of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (Required)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Chaplain by the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. (BCCI) through the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or a similar group with the goal of obtaining certification (Preferred within 2 Years)
  • Ecclesiastical Endorsement or Ordination/Commissioning (Preferred)

Work Experience

  • 3+ years experience providing spiritual care in clinical hospital setting (Preferred)
  • Experience with end-of-life, trauma, bereavement, pediatric or adult care (Preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Windows Operating System
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Documents all visits and calls in the electronic medical record within the appropriate timeframe
  • Crisis intervention, spiritual care, spiritual assessment, problem solving, critical thinking
  • Ability to provide spiritual leadership and consultation in a high stress environment; work with all levels of the organization

Position Details/Preferred Qualifications

This Chaplain role is a clinical service providing last rights, end of life support and family services during profoundly challenging life events for our adult patients and families, located in our Ahuja Medical Center. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years’ experience providing spiritual care in a clinical hospital setting, as well as experience with end-of-life, trauma, or bereavement. Must have a master’s degree from an accredited theological seminary along with completion of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education. It is highly preferred that the Chaplain be certified by the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. (BCCI) through the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or a similar group. This position is full-time, day shift, Mon-Fri.
