As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Chaplain ministers, provides spiritual support, counsels and advocates for patients, family members and staff. The incumbent will provide instruction related to Advanced Directives, ethics, issues of spirituality and religion, and bereavement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Provides direct spiritual support and/or counsel to patients and families in keeping with the patients’/families’ beliefs (includes conducting or arranging for funerals or memorial services where indicated).
2. Communicates effectively with a variety of individuals he/she comes in contact with through active listening and responding.
3. Recognizes and supports religious, spiritual and cultural diversity.
4. Participates in patient care conferences by exploring and assessing the potential spiritual needs of patients/families and reporting on services indicated.
5. Exhibits skills as an advocate, negotiator, counselor, facilitator of family conferences.
6. Works with community clergy and community groups to enhance their sensitivity to the spiritual concerns of patients/families experiencing terminal illness and loss.
7. Consistently demonstrates a team approach within the department and works well as interdisciplinary team members to maintain continuum of care.
8. Develops and maintains a resource group of clergy to whom specific aspects of spiritual care may be delegated.
9. Provides educational programs for community clergy and others as requested.
10. Is alert to and facilitates resolving ethical issues.
11. Maintains timely documentation of visits to patients/families.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s degree required.
2. Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and board certified chaplain, or eligible for certification and obtain certification with in 3 years of the date of hire.
3. Valid Ohio driver’s license, with proof of auto liability insurance.
4. Ability to articulate a pastoral theology that is both contemporary and functional for the population served.
5. Ability to remain non-anxious, nonjudgmental and to handle stress associated with crisis intervention.
6. Upholds the values, ethics and mission of the APC, NACC,HCCN, and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services.
7. Maintains ordination/commission with and/or endorsement by an appropriate religious body.
8. Basic computer skills adequate for the tasks.
9. Demonstrates competence in age-specific patient care as needed in working with patients and family members.
10. Demonstrated experience in working with patients/families dealing with life-threatening illness and death.
