Established as the Department of Cinema and Television in 1991, today’s Academy of Film has grown into a leading hub for screen and media education. Renamed in 2009 to reflect its broader ambitions, the Academy is now part of the School of Creative Arts alongside the Academy of Music and Academy of Visual Arts, supporting a multidisciplinary approach that extends to art-tech and global entertainment business. Details of the post

The Academy of Film seeks an inspiring, visionary Director to lead the school at the intersection of traditional film scholarships and the rapidly evolving landscape of film and media production. Working to advance scholarship, promote creative and artistic accomplishment, education and civic engagement, and encourage distinctive curricular design and development, the Director fosters a collaborative, inclusive environment that supports faculty research and secures inspiring, future-focused learning experiences for students. A vital element of the role is forging and deepening partnerships with filmmakers, studios, and technology leaders across the creative industries, ensuring engagement with current industry trends and real-world projects.

Supporting the University’s research mission, the Director will advance the faculty’s scholarly activities, including opportunities afforded by interdisciplinary approaches. The Director serves as the Academy’s public voice, articulating its contributions to local, state, regional, cross-border and international communities.

Ideal candidates will be recognised for scholarly and/or professional achievement, with demonstrated leadership and administrative experience in a creative environment and academia, and a strong commitment to education and scholarship. The Director manages a large number of academic and administrative staff across Film/TV, Acting for Global Screen, MA in Producing, MFA in Film Production, and PhD studies.

While the Directorship will demand significant time commitment to management and administrative duties, it is expected to be a concurrent appointment alongside an academic position in the Academy, with the appointee contributing to research and teaching activities.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the rank of Chair Professor/Professor/Professor of Practice. Candidates with exemplary academic or professional achievements may be considered for an Endowed Professorship in Creative Arts.

Requirements:

  • For Chair Professor / Professor, a doctorate degree in relevant discipline with distinguished record in research and academic leadership;
  • For Professor of Practice, a master of Fine Arts (MFA) or master’s degree (MA) in relevant discipline, with a minimum of 15 years of high-level professional experience in the film industry and an established national or international reputation;
  • Proven experience with emerging technologies in Film/Cinematic Arts, Media Production;
  • Solid track record of collaborating effectively across academia and the creative industries;
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and fostering inclusive excellence; and
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Terms of Appointment:

The University offers a competitive package which include gratuity/retirement benefits, annual leave, medical and dental coverage, monthly cash allowance and relocation allowance, as applicable. Direct tenure may be offered to exceptionally strong candidate.
