Job Description

The Certified Tobacco Training Specialist (CTTS) works with patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting to educate them about tobacco cessation. The CTTS works with the Tobacco Cessation Coordinator and the program's nurse practitioner to provide intake sessions to gather information about the patient's history and tobacco use. The CTTS collaborates with a nurse practitioner and/or physician to individualize treatment plans to assist participants with cessation and tracks patients for up to one year following counseling services.

  • All customers are courteously welcomed/greeted as evidenced by lack of complaints.
  • Questions and concerns from customers are answered/addressed in an appropriate manner as evidenced by lack of complaints.
  • Tailors and prioritizes caring practice to individual needs, including cultural/ethical/spiritual needs at all times.
  • Efficiency in the delivery of care is ensured; immediate priorities are determined and solutions for problems offered as needed.
  • Variances from expected outcomes are identified and revisions in the plan of care are made based on patient outcomes as necessary.
  • Assistance is provided to customers who request information or initiate a referral.
  • Communication/collaboration with team members, patients and physicians is consistently provided to maximize patient outcomes.

  • Customers are provided clear, accurate information about the consequences of tobacco use.
  • Individualized treatment plans are developed using comprehensive, evidence-based assessments and treatment strategies, including clear, accurate information about medications and effective, practical, cognitive behavioral strategies about cessation.
  • Effective treatment for all forms of tobacco use is provided.
  • All patient activities are accurately documented per documentation standards.
  • Specific, well-accepted methods for tracking individual progress, record keeping, program documentation, outcomes measurement and reporting are utilized.
  • All patient documentation is accurately processed.
  • Evidence-based practice and research findings are incorporated into practice to enhance outcomes at all times.
  • An understanding of the science behind tobacco addiction, nicotine withdrawal symptoms and effective treatments for tobacco use is demonstrated.
  • Patients' individual, specific health and personal needs are balanced with clinical interventions, appropriate nicotine replacement therapy and counseling services to address cessation needs.
  • Appropriate referrals are made to other healthcare providers of various specialties when a health need is identified in a patient.
  • A general knowledge of the Smoking Cessation Trust is maintained at all times.
  • Cessation classes are provided on a regular schedule.

  • Inpatients who use tobacco are visited while still in the hospital.
  • Patients are navigated through cessation services and tracked for measurement of their success for one year following the conclusion of counseling services.
  • Tracking and performance measurement data are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assistance is provided for coordination and participation in various hospital committees, special events, and special projects.

  • Other duties as assigned are completed.
  • Graduate of an accredited school in the practitioner's chosen field: RN, LCSW, LPC or LAC, Respiratory Therapy.
  • Current license in chosen field (RN or LCSW, LPC or LAC, Respiratory Therapy)
  • Certification as tobacco training specialist within three months of hire
  • Current certified tobacco specialist with additional training as a certified Fax-to-Quit provider within three months of employment.
  • 3 year's experience in a hospital or patient care/clinic setting with direct patient care or counseling or health coaching experience.
  • Trained by a program accredited by the Council of Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP) within one year of hire date.
  • Proficient in the English language, verbal and written communication skills, computer skills.
