Job Description

PRN (Per Diem)

Provides direct patient care for patient populations, pediatric through geriatric. Provides care focused on the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with the surgeon, anesthesia provider and surgical team as needed regarding the patient’s condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Assesses operating room for equipment functioning and room readiness. Obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met. Monitors, positions and functions as a patent advocate during procedures.

OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, sets up and maintains a sterile field of minor and major surgical procedures applying special knowledge of sepsis.
  • Applies specialized knowledge of specialized instruments, equipment, and supplies utilized in the Operating Room.
  • Organizes instruments, equipment, and supplies for easy access and maximum efficiency.
  • Follows appropriate guidelines for setting up sterile field and instruments for designated procedures.
  • Re-stocks Operating Room supplies as caseload permits.
  • Maintains current knowledge of procedures performed in the Operating Room.
  • Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to assist in surgical procedures.
  • Under guidance of the Registered Nurse, determines appropriate priorities for activities based on work demand.
  • Provides care to each patient undergoing surgical intervention in a manner that preserves and protects the patient’s autonomy, dignity and human rights.
  • Takes emergency call as assigned.
  • Understands and practices and ensures sterile technique. Correctly operates sterilizers.
  • Ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations.
  • Maintains or acquires skills on equipment and machinery necessary to complete required responsibilities.
  • Follow policies and procedures for counts.
  • Follows policies and procedures or specimens.
  • Properly prepares rooms, instruments, and equipment for procedures, and assists in cleaning room after completion of procedures.
  • Checks and records daily humidity level, temperature, and test line isolation monitor system for assigned room.
  • Ensures that all medication/solutions are verified by the scrub and the circulator including the concentration and expiration date.
  • Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

BASIC SKILLS

  • Basic computer skills

  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a team member, supports and assist the team

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Current certification from an Operating Room Technician Accredited School
  • Current BLS Certification
  • One (1) year work experience in operation room preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Additional languages a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • May be required to assist with patients or equipment up to 500 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand and walk 75% of shift on hard surfaces.
  • Must be able to sit, bend, stoop and reach above one’s head
