Job Category: Health CareThe Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field, surgical instruments, and supplies necessary for operative procedures. The CST anticipates the needs of the surgical team, assists the surgeon throughout all phases of the procedure, and ensures a safe, efficient, and sterile environment. Additional responsibilities include pre- and post-operative room cleaning and equipment preparation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Prepare sterile supplies and instruments using sterile technique. Set up the sterile field and ensure surgical equipment is functioning properly.
2. Assist in positioning and prepping patients as needed for surgery.
3. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and procedure.
4. Pass supplies, equipment, and instruments during procedures. Assist with suction, suture preparation, irrigation, medication transfer (not administration), specimen handling, and retraction.
5. Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to closed wounds. Assist in sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN before, during, and after the procedure.
6. Perform intraoperative activation of power equipment under the authority of the physician.
7. Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization. Participate in room turnover and preparation for subsequent cases.
8. Serve as a resource to peers and assist in onboarding and training of new staff. Maintain current knowledge through continuing education and best practices in surgical technology.
9. Collaborate with surgical team to support patient safety and operational efficiency.
10. Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies to ensure patient and staff safety.
11. Maintain effective communication with the surgical team and demonstrate professionalism in high-pressure situations.
12. Perform additional responsibilities as delegated to support surgical team operations and patient care.

Qualifications
- Education & Training:
- - High School diploma or equivalent
- - Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES preferred).

Experience:
- - 1-3 years of Surgical Technologist experience in a fast-paced multi-specialty hospital or surgery center is required.
- Licensure/Certification/Registration:
- - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS‑C) through NCCT required.
- - Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as employees may occasionally be required to operate a company vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be provided as required by law.
