POSITION SUMMARY
Contributes to the organization perform the duties of trained technician. Assists the practitioner and registered nurse in rendering professional care to patients undergoing surgical procedures within the center, in accordance with established procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the registered nurse. Functions cooperatively with practitioners and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure all tasks for next day/s surgeries are completed timely to prevent shipping charges and delays in care.
Schedule breaks for all scrub techs based on the cases for the day.
Ensure all compliance guidelines are following to the highest standard.
Works closely with team members to ensure patient safety and physician satisfaction.
Update all preference cards and ensures they are kept up to date with MD changes as they occur.
Responsible for implementation of the electronic preference cards in the HER which ties to inventory and cost.
Responsible for cost management: supplies, equipment, case requests.
May serve as trainer.
General
Performs according to compliance and other policies and procedures.
Assists in preparing operating room for planned surgical procedures.
Demonstrates care and handling of surgical instruments per HEA Surgery Center policy.
Actively participates to accomplish five-minute turnover goals.
Participates in Performance Improvement/Safety Program.
Assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies.
Assists with housekeeping responsibilities as directed by nursing staff.
Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibilities for own professional growth and development. Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
Must maintain patient right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors, family, or patient.
Keeps all working areas clean, neat and stocked.
Assists with answering the phone when necessary.
Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of exposure control plan.
Scrubs hands and arms, dries and dons sterile gown and gloves according to AORN standards.
Inspects sterile items and instruments prior to use for sterility.
Observes strict aseptic technique throughout the entire procedure and reports breaks in technique to the circulating nurse and the surgeon.
Assists MD with gowning and gloving.
Handle all instruments for the MD, may cut sutures, keep track of sponges and needles, operate lights, clean and dress wounds, prep and disposal of specimens.
Patient prepping.
Assist with patient transfer.
Assist with room.
Pays strict attention to the work of the operating team and anticipates their needs.
Assists with cleaning and restocking room at completion of assignment.
Perform duties of the Circulating/ Float Surgical Tech who is the unsterile team member.
o Assisting with room turnover or getting required supplies and instruments for active cases.
o Opening sterile supplies for placement by the Scrub Tech.
o Assist with pulling Preference cards for the next MD
o Assist the Anesthesia team with oxygen and monitor connections.
o Assist bringing patients to the OR.
o Assist with Prepping the patient.
o Connection of BSS to the Phaco machine.
o Applies ESU if applicable.
o Ensure specimens are labeled according to MD requests.
o Secure dressing and shields after surgery.
o Assist in room turnover and Scrub Tech breaks.
o Restock case carts.
o Assist PCT with pulling supplies from receiving into sterile storage.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing/Clinical Manager.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Must be able to push, pull, bend, twist, and reach. Use care and proper judgment when lifting or carrying items ensuring to utilize proper posture and body mechanics. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Classified as having occupational exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.

QualificationsCOMPETENCIES
EDUCATION High School diploma or GED equivalent.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES Certification through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
Member of the Association of Surgical Technologists.
EXPERIENCE Surgical technician training (required)
3 or more years of related work experience in ophthalmologic operating room preferred.
