Performs technical skills and provides assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and others in the CVOR. Performs as a leader(updating cards & trays) and a mentor (orienting CSTs & RNs) in the CVOR.
Effective Communication: Communicates professionally with team members/customers related to patient care situations, especially during high-stress situations in the CVOR (crashing on cardiopulmonary bypass, unexpected changes in surgical procuedure due to unexpected findings and/or high acuity patient population.
Safety: Maintains a safe environment for self, patients, team members.
Team work: Works closely and professionally with CVOR team members to assure that needs of the CVOR/patients/customers are met. Fulfills and is flexible with schedule and higher than normal on-call shifts, off-shifts and holiday requirements to ensure CVOR needs are met.
Personal/Professional growth/development: Pursues educational opportunities related to CVOR advancements. In addition maintains required annual competencies related to heart failure surgical procedures (annual on-line and in-person lab) and completes additional required structural heart continuing education hours (10 hours annually).
Job knowledge: Demonstrates advanced knowledge of processes and/or tools for the position and knowledge of the unit thru understanding of policies/unit goals/organizational goals.
Quality: Participates in unit based quality initiatives. Active engagement to maintain and update surgeon preference cards and specialty supplies/equipment in the CVOR to provide highest quality of care for cardiac and thoracic patients.

The CVOR team is a small group of high performing professionals. Team members must be flexible and able to fulfill on-call requirements. The certifed scrub technologist must be able to work in an environment that is at times high stress and fast paced while caring for high acuity patients. Technical skills are crucial in order to learn surgeon routines and to be able to anticipate surgeon needs. It is pertinent to perform as a leader in the COVR; updating surgeon preference cards, maintaining specialty surgical supplies and instrument trays, and mentoring new CST team members in orientation and RN team members learning to scrub cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures.
