A vacancy for a Certified School Nurse- Extended Year currently exists within the Student Services Division of the Chester County Intermediate Unit. The position is located at the Child & Career Development Center- Engle Education Center in West Grove, PA.

To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students for the purpose of minimizing absences due to illness, maximizing educational opportunities, and creating a healthy school climate.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively with health care providers, students parents, school staff and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
  • Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive school health program.
  • Collects information about the health development status of students for compliance with state immunization regulations and Board of Education policies.
  • Conducts school programs of immunization, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing.
  • Performs nursing assessment for students who are ill or injured; applies appropriate theory as basis for providing first aid, nursing care, intervention and referrals for those students.
  • Evaluates nursing care provided and changes plan of care as necessary.
  • Implements Board policy with respect to the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with certain infectious and contagious diseases (e.g., Tuberculosis).
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation in accordance with state and federal law, and Board of Education policies.
  • Develops individual health care plan (ICHP) when needed with specific goals, nursing diagnosis, and interventions delineating school-nursing actions unique to students' needs and for incorporation into the student's individualized educational plan (IEP).
  • Intervenes as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
  • Serves as a member of school teams as designated health care professional (e.g., Crisis Teams, PPT, Section 504).
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and others as needed to meet student health needs.
  • Provides instruction and training regarding the Heimlich Maneuver, Blood Borne Pathogen training, the school district's Emergency plan, and with regard to providing care for students, including students with disabilities.
  • Contributes to nursing and school health through innovations in theory; practice and participation in research, including narrative and statistical reports.
  • Provides medical assessment to school administration team as requested.
  • Provides health education to students as requested.
  • Notifies the appropriate person or agency of student's injury/illness in accordance with Board policy as necessary.
  • Confers with parents, students and school district staff and professionals to interpret health and developmental assessments.

Qualifications:

  1. Professional Certifications
    1. BSN or bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related science area required, with coursework in growth and development, health assessment, public or school health, crisis intervention and health education
    2. Master's degree in related field preferred
    3. Successful experiences working with special education population, preferably in a community or school setting strongly preferred
  2. Education and Experience
    1. Valid PA nursing license required
    2. Current School Nurse Certification required, per state guideline CSPG 80 - School Nurse (PK-12) or willingness to become emergency certified and enroll in a Certification program to obtain cert within 18 months
    3. Special Education PK-12 certification preferred
    4. Current CPR/First Aid certification required

Schedule:
7.5 hours a day; 209-days per year (213 year one; 210 year two)

Salary (2026 - 2027 School-Year):
Instructional I: $68,371 - $98,703/yr.
Instructional II: $71,317 - $102,656/yr.
Master's Degree: $76,288 - $112,102/yr.
Master's + 15: $80,014 - $116,516/yr.
Master's + 30: $81,857 - $118,630/yr.
*Placement on salary scale is commensurate with years of experience in a relevant role*

About Chester County Intermediate Unit

Created in 1971 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, the Chester County Intermediate Unit is a regional educational service agency that exists to provide quality, cost-effective services to the community and its residents. The Chester County Intermediate Unit administers instructional, enrichment and administrative programs and services to Chester County’s 12 public school districts, and to over 45 private and parochial schools in the county. These programs include instructional, remedial and enrichment services for regular and special education students and career and technical education programs for secondary and post-secondary students. The CCIU provides direct instruction to over 5,000 students a year and support services to an additional 30,000 students a year.

In addition, the IU supports teachers, school administrators, school directors and school districts through a multitude of services, including, but not limited to: business and administrative services, communications services, technology services and human resources. The diversity of CCIU programs enables IU staff to interact with school district personnel at all levels and to maintain a cohesive educational network throughout Chester County.
