Job Description

Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of the Lab Management Team, performs phlebotomy, heel and finger sticks; operates and maintains point of care lab equipment (CLIA Waived); conducts problem resolution, supply inventories and record keeping; renders excellent and effective communication to laboratory internal and external customers.

Essential Functions of the Job:
• Demonstrate skills and abilities by following the guidelines in venipuncture, heel and finger stick.
• Have knowledge and skills in basic collection and specimen preparation, storage and disposal of specimen, revision of daily temperature and recording; according to Lab Procedure Manuals.
• Perform point of care testing, quality control, reporting and records keeping of CLIA waived complexity testing according to Lab Procedure Manuals.
• Demonstrate basic computer literacy to meet department needs and duties (i.e. records keeping, health record entries, results tracking, etc.).
• Performs patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care providers following established clinical protocols and policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities.
• Ability to multi task, flexible, ensures accuracy and completeness of work, adaptable to changes in department and business needs.
• Accountable and requires minimal direction and supervision and maintain good working relationship with employees, coworkers and departments.
• Maintains workstation, furnishings and equipment clean, and supply inventory at prescribed stock levels.
• Assist in checking daily temperature and recording.
• Possess personal characteristics of professionalism, credible commitment to high standards with excellent communication skills; effectively and clearly communicate verbally and in writing with patients and other customers.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
• Adhere to the established departmental policies and objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• May be requested to assist in communication efforts that require verbal translation for patients; depending on the assignment.
• May be required to travel to other SYHealth sites as needed.
• Maintain current continuing education and professional licensure.
• Attend and participate in meetings and additional duties as required.

Job Requirements

Experience Required:
• Preferred three months medical laboratory experience as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).
• Preferred 30-40 blood draws.
• Proficient in medical terminology.
• Basic computer literacy.

Education Required:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Certifications/Licenses Required:
• Phlebotomy Certification – Current California State Phlebotomy Licensure
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
• Preferred: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements (Sitting/Standing/Walking/Lifting/Noisy):
Exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens subject to varying and unpredictable situations
Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens and patients.
Frequent prolonged standing/walking
Occasionally subjected to irregular hours
Lifting 0-20 lbs
Carrying 0-20 lbs
Bending, kneeling, climbing, and pulling 0-10 lbs., repetitive use of hands, sample grasping, reaching body and hand twisting.
Driving from one clinic to another clinic
Wearing protective personal equipment such as gloves, face shield, lab coats, goggles, etc.
Working around electrical workplace equipment (e.g. centrifuge)

Universal Requirements:
Pre-employment requirements include I-9, physical, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, pre-employment PPDs. Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment.
