Job Description

The Certified Nursing Assistant cares for residents under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical/vocational nurse. This role assists residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), ensures a safe and comfortable environment, and supports licensed nursing staff in delivering individualized care in accordance with regulatory requirements and facility policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions of this position include the following. This list is not intended to be exclusive or exhaustive. There may be additional essential functions based on the unique nature of the position or environment.

  • Provide direct resident care, including assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, incontinent care as applicable, oral hygiene and feeding.
  • Measure and record vital signs, weight, percentage of meal consumed intake/output as directed.
  • Assist residents with mobility, transfers, and position using proper body mechanics and lift equipment as applicable.
  • Respond promptly to call lights, resident needs, and changes in condition; report observations to licensed nursing staff.
  • Support residents’ independence and dignity, while ensuring safety and comfort
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation and in accordance with facility procedures
  • Follow infection control, safety, and universal precaution guidelines at all times.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to residents, fostering a positive living environment
  • Maintains a clean, safe and comfortable environment
  • Provides postmortem care
  • Make routine rounds on each assigned resident every two hours.
  • Provides skin care and observes residents’ skin when giving care and reports changes to licensed nurse.
  • Modifies own behavior in response to residents’ behaviors.
  • Is aware of developmental tasks associated with the aging process.
  • Contributes to the residents’ assessment (MDS/CAA’s) and the plan of care.
  • Provides nursing rehabilitation/restorative nursing services
    • Promote residents’ ability to adapt and adjust to living as independently as possible.
    • Assists the resident in self-care according to the resident’s abilities.
    • Assists the residents in the use of assistive devices for transferring, walking and mobility, dressing and grooming, eating and swallowing.
    • Maintains range of motion, proper turning and positioning in bed and chair.
    • Assists with bowel and bladder retraining.
    • Instructs the resident on the care and use of prosthetic and orthotic devices.
    • Incorporates training and skill practice activities, which include repetition, physical or verbal cueing, and task segmentation.
  • Cares for residents with Dementia
    • Knows how to respond to residents’ behaviors.
    • Allows residents to make personal choices.
    • Provides and reinforces other behavior consistent with residents’ dignity.
    • Uses the resident’s families as a source of emotional support for the resident.
    • Demonstrates a basic understanding of behavior and functional symptoms associated with dementia by providing interventions and treatments to help reduce these symptoms.
    • Uses modification in the presentation of activities of daily living to maintain and maximize resident functions.
    • Uses effective intervention techniques to address behavioral concerns.
    • Assists with transporting residents to activities.
    • Demonstrates effective communication techniques for residents with dementia.
  • Provides non-resident care including but not limited to:
    • Wash wheelchairs.
    • Cleaning soiled utility areas.
    • Cleaning shower and whirlpool rooms.
    • Cleaning kitchen areas on the nursing unit.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Graduate/GED

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing with the certification board or is a graduate of a state approved nursing assistant training program and passed a state approved competency examination (written and skills) within 120 days of employment; name entered into state nurse aide registry.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Computer skills are required.
  • Meets all state and federal criminal background check requirements.
