Work Shift: Full-Time 40 hrs. per wk. M-F Days
Work Location: University of Miami Hospital & Clinics - Doral UHealth - Perioperative Services (UPAC)
1. Provides for patients’ personal hygiene by giving bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves, and assisting with showers.
2. Assists with meals and feeds patients, ambulates, turns, and positions patients, and provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.
3. Administers enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, therapeutic and sitz baths, and applies restraints.
4. Performs sugar and acetone urine testing, specimen collection, and post-mortem care.
5. Answers patients’ call lights and requests promptly.
6. Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and staff and transports patients and equipment.
7. Reports patient conditions to the assigned nurse to ensure professional assessment.
8. Measures and records food and liquid intake and output, and checks and records vital signs.
9. Provides patient help with walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions – Doral Perioperative Services
CNA Duties
• Observes and reports patient’s status and needs.
• Obtains weights and vital signs, reporting results to nursing team.
• Obtains specimens from nursing staff for transport to lab or designated department.
• Operates all equipment in a safe manner.
• Alerts appropriate RN team members as emergencies arise, or when changes in patient status are noted.
• Gathers equipment that will be needed to control emergency patient care situations.
• Demonstrates age specific competencies.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Retrieves patient from waiting room and directs them to appropriate clinic room.
• Assists with patient transport to and from department as needed.
• Provides patient and family centered care, by assisting families of patients, providing updates as needed.
• Cleans clinic room and patient care area equipment as needed between patients.
Clerical and Administrative Duties
• Responsible for clinical and clerical functions of the respective unit.
• Performs secretarial duties for the unit including but not limited to faxing, copying, mailing, and typing any essential material.
• Answers telephone promptly and courteously using proper telephone etiquette and routes calls and messages appropriately.
• Ability to work both in the clinical and clerical setting.
• Maintains chart organization per established procedures.
• Maintains the orderliness of medical records in the electronic health record by ensuring accuracy of any outside records that are uploaded to the system.
• Requests results, labs, and other patient-related records from outside offices.
• Follows-up with patients to ensure that pre-op testing is done in a timely manner according to the scheduled date of surgery.
• Contacts surgical patients for their scheduled arrival time and location the day before surgery.
• Adheres to HIPPA standards.
• Follows-up with medical doctor’s offices to ensure that all of the pre-op results are sent to the UPAC department in a timely manner to ensure that the patent can proceed with the scheduled surgical procedure.
• Communicates closely with the RNs and APPs to ensure that the correct results/records have been obtained, reviewed, and finalized in a timely manner.
• Reviews clinical records for completeness and to identify missing data (labs, EKGs, X-Rays, Cardiac Testing, Medical Clearances, etc.) in a timely manner to ensure that the patient can proceed with the scheduled surgical procedure.
• Communicates with RNs, APPs, and Manager in a timely manner regarding missing reports.
• Communicates concerns and changes to RNs, APPs, and Manager.
• Delivers medical reports to RNs and APPs for review.
• Accesses the computer system to obtain medical records, including UChart, Lab Corp, Quest etc.
• Maintains effective communication with patients, physicians, RNs, APPs, and staff members.
• Implements appropriate preventative measure for patients identified with safety risks (i.e. falls).
• Schedules follow-up appointments and consults ensuring patient has appropriate information and provide as needed.
• Assists with scheduling as needed for labs, or clinic appointments as needed.
• Retrieves and/or assists clinical personnel in retrieving diagnostic studies as needed.
• Retrieves and prints schedules for the next day.
• Orders supplies for supply room as needed.
• Maintains area stocked with the necessary supplies and forms.
